I heart foursquare

grandrapids foursquare check-in
As an avid Foursquare user, I thought I would post some suggestions for other users:

1. No checking in to your house. People, stop adding your homes as venues.
1a. No checking in to different rooms in your house, this is not cool.
1b. You can add a shout that you're home, without checking in. Simply say, "I'm home & off the grid."

2. If you work at a retail/restaurant establishment, it is not fair to check-in while you're working. By all means, check-in when you're off the clock.

3. When adding venues, please fill out the correct name of the venue.

4. Check-in when you're physically inside of an establishment, at the location outside (parks), or you paid for service (take-out, drive-thru, etc).
4a. If you stop in a place for more than five minutes, I'm okay with the check-in. If you spend money at a place, by all means check-in.

5. Walking down the street does not mean check-in to all the places you walk by.
5a. Same rule applies to driving.

6. Do not add spaces within your office as a separate venue such as the pool table or office bathroom.
6a. Same rule applies in a store. Do not add Aisle 10 as a separate venue.

7. Do not push all your foursquare location check-in's to Twitter & Facebook. However, it's cool to push your badges and Mayorship on, be proud of your hard work.

8. Check to see if the venue is already listed before adding it, thank you!

9. Foursquare is about getting out & getting active in your community.
9a. Don't forget to have fun!

I'm also an avid FourSquare user and agree completely with your list! My biggest pet peeve is seeing when someone checks into their home or workplace. Frankly that should be illegal on FourSquare! 8-) Incorrect addresses don't bother me much as I enjoy correcting them (as a superuser of course).

This is what I've wanted to say for weeks! I find it funny how some people I know have 4 times as many points because they do work, home, work, home, etc. Thanks for the post!

Neo,
How are the local businesses embracing foursquare in Charlotte?

I think checking into work every day is somewhat suspect as well. I only check-in when I am at an establishment.

I also think people should turn off the twitter and facebook option. Announcing badges is fine but getting flooded with check-ins can be annoying.

Great post Rachel.

I've been to a couple of restaurants where they were in full FourSquare mode. At one, the mayor eats for free. At the other the mayor gets something special but I have no idea what it is. :) I'm not there enough to be granted mayorship, though I'm betting it's something akin to a free appetizer.

I think it's great that stores and restaurants are offering things if you're the mayor, but unfortunately the system relies too much on loyalty. IMO FourSquare should require that you actually be at the place (verified through GPS). As it stands right now, I could check-in to any location in the world without having actually been there.
