Arlington County = Smart Growth

Arlington County, Virginia! The county that so many municipalities should emulate. Arlington was the one that defied the odds when it was growing back in the 1960's and 1970's by incorporating Smart Growth(a bad word back then). During this time Americas love for the automobile trumpeted more than the expansion of mass transit into the suburbs. Many peopl...

From: Downtown Master Plan & Urban Code

urban design, street, pedestrian

Context: My stance is that the urban environment requires that the pedestrian be treated as king. All building projects should be oriented towards the street, and all streets should be built for people. Skyscrapers are an inherent part of any city- however, in this case, Spartanburg wants to establish a height restriction. The problem is that some people...

It was discovered today that during a maintenance window several months ago, a small percentage of user's uploads were accidentally deleted from the server. While backups are maintained, they are only maintained for a few days and are basically for a catastrophic circumstance.

Unfortunately this means that the deleted photos are gone for good. This...

Virginia and High Speed Rail

Virginia High Speed Rail

I'll begin by saying the proposals out currently for Virginia are not high speed rail. A train traveling at 110mph I repeat is not high speed! Maybe back in the 1950's it would have been considered as high speed!?

Today state officials are trying to start a line from DC to Hampton Roads. Instead of using 1940's...

I heart foursquare

grandrapids, foursquare, check-in

As an avid Foursquare user, I thought I would post some suggestions for other users:

1. No checking in to your house. People, stop adding your homes as venues.
1a. No checking in to different rooms in your house, this is not cool.
1b. You can add a shout that you're home, without checking in. Simply say, "I'm home & off the grid."

What the HP, more development news in Benton Harbor

Posted by mgman in MG Man's Blog, 30 November 2008 - * * * * - · 933 views

Well, this will be the last in a string of Benton Harbor related development posts. This post concerns three different renovations that add loft and apartments to downtown Benton Harbor. I will give a run down of the three conversions covered by a local newspaper article and then, surprise, will actually give a link to the newspaper article so everyone can...

Is Va. Beach anti-people?

Posted by vdogg in vdogg's Blog, 29 June 2006 - - - - - - · 882 views

I must admit, i'm usually full square behind our council due to their pro-urban development stance. Recently however they've come out with 2 of the most asinine policies i've seen in years. First, they are closing down the municipal lots at midnight on the oceanfront. This is both counterproductive and counterintuitive. The bars and clubs will...
