Springfield, Ohio: Lagonda Bank Building

The Lagonda Bank Building is located in downtown Springfield, Ohio at the corner of Main Street and Fountain Avenue. The bank was organized in 1873. In 1927, their original Italianate-styled office building was renovated, removing all original architectural elements.

1 Below is a view of the Lagonda Bank Building prior to the 1927-1928 renovation.

By 1948, the Lagonda Bank Building had become too crowded so a mezzanine level was constructed. In 1963, the exterior was once given a renovation headed by the local Interstate Maintenance and Engineering Company, which included a new painted exterior, the replacement of the rusting metal cornice and trim with limestone and rebuilt windows.

On July 10, 1966, a dedication ceremony was held for the new Lagonda Bank building at North Street and Fountain Avenue. The two-story building, designed by A.C. Leander of Columbus and built by Rodgers Construction of Springfield, measured 50 feet by 160 feet with a surface lot for 37 cars and a drive-in window. The colonial design featured 26 Roman doric columns, with the front columns weighing one ton each and the remainder weighing 1,400 pounds each. Inside, the first floor consisted of a main lobby, main vault and safety deposit box area, the commercial loan department and closing office, along with the president’s office, installation loan department, travel department and closing department. The second floor included the board room, various offices, and a loan closing room. The basement contained the bookkeeping department and a lunch room, along with mechanics.
Today, both the original and replacement Lagonda Bank Building are vacant.

Okay, I'm supposed to be packing right now. So while I would like to make a comprehensive list of ongoing projects in the metro area, I am only going to post a list of Cincinnati related development websites for right now:

Urban Ohio: Southwest Ohio Projects & Construction: the section of Urban Ohio which most deals with Cincinnati development; decently active and updated daily. Also see their Cincinnati photo albums.
Cincinnati.com: Development and construction updates can most likely be found under "business" and "news."

Hello there! I'm moving into Clifton Heights, Cincinnati next week in time to start into the Masters of Architecture at UC at the end of the month. I've been a regular reader (and occasional poster) on the Grand Rapids, MI forum, and I was a bit surprised how dead the Ohio forums are. Even with a slowed economy, and fewer construction projects, Grand Rapids still gets an average of 2-3 new posts a day. There must certainly be things to talk about in urban Ohio, there's just no one here right now to talk about them.

So out of curiosity, who on Urban Planet still monitors this forum for new activity, and who would like to help activate the discussion again?

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Two years later, but for anyone who cares, the actual quote is:

"When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Cincinnati because it's always twenty years behind the times."

Aside from that, I can't really help with verifying this quote. It's very likely that this quote originally passed by word of mouth, and thereby left no paper trail of its origins. On the other hand, many of Twain's known quotes were written in his books, reviews, and articles so they are easily identifiable.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Wegmans was supposedly looking at expanding to the Cleveland area several years ago, but their expansion strategy changed, and they're not concentrating on the southern Northeast Corridor; specifically DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and suburban New Jersey.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Hi everyone. I am going to visit my sister in Columbus for the Christmas holidays and wanted to give her and her fiance a gift certificate to one of Columbus's unique, and highly recommended restaurants. I visit Columbus only twice a year so I do not know the city very well. She lives off Bethel Rd. near 315.

It doesn't have to be the most expensive restaurant by any means, but that one place that everyone likes, and is unique to Columbus (no chains if possible).

thanks for any help.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

If you are looking for urban neighborhoods try Pleasant Ridge, Walnut Hills, Hyde Park, Oakley, or Mount Lookout. These would all be Cincinnati Public Schools otherwise if you have the money you can send them to one of the numerous private schools.

If you're looking for something a little more suburan try...Mount Washington, Anderson/Cherry Grove, Kenwood, Madeira, Montgomery, Loveland, or Mason. Indian Hill is very nice...but it's definitely mansions.

On Monday, August 24, Xavier University will admit a record class of freshmen approximately 1,200 large into the classrooms. An elongated move-in schedule that stretched from Thursday morning into Friday evening. The admission is 40 percent larger than last year's class of 860 students, and 7,152 submitted applications to Xavier. For the fall, Xavier's total student population is 6,355.

Around 90 percent of the freshmen are living on campus in residence halls along Victory Parkway and Herald Avenue corridors.

The 200-strong Xavier Move Crew, dressed in bright green t-shirts, assisted students by unloading the cars and carrying the new students' belongings up to their respective rooms. Here are several photographs from Xavier's move-in day 2009.
Everyone talks on here a lot about the really super-rich neighbors and suburbs....is there anywhere that's just decent enough????? I mean like not the most awesome part of town ever but okay enough that I don't have to worry about my children and where they can get a good education??? Sometimes I feel like the whole world is just rich mansions and then like housing projects!!! Isn't there someplace I can work hard and take care of my kids??

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Out of the three cities, I would definitely choose Columbus. The LGBT community is extremely large and very friendly, much more so than many cities I frequent. I luv the German Village and there is quite a bit to do here thanks to abundant retail and Ohio State being here..
My only complaints is that the skyline is lacking in visual appeal and the city lays to 'flat.'

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

With all of the Cincinnati-related threads in the past... two days, I hope that mine isn't adding more onto the awesomeness of the past week We need more UrbanOhio'ers to live in... other parts of the state!

I've been adding photographs to UrbanUp for a while, but more are coming.

1 City Home: This 22-unit single-family home development along the 1400 block of Pleasant Street includes the restoration of the corner property at 14th and Race.

4 Good Fellows Hall: Good Fellows Hall at 1306 Main Street is a five loft condominium development, with prices ranging from the mid-$200,000's to $400,000.

16 Riverfront Transit Center: The Riverfront Transit Center remains mostly unused, catering only to tourist lines. Although it was funded with public monies, the public is not allowed to see this seemingly pork-barrel project.
I had to shoot some photographs for my employer, so I decided... why not grab some building shots? I had to do a series of "windows," so this naturally fit. Some of these photographs are older; the ones from today are nice but the clouds made it difficult to grab some.

I love Cincinnati but hate the I-275 freeway. I often travel to and thru the metro area on Interstate 75 but find the beltway requires too much travel to make it a practical bypass. That forces me to use I-75 all the way through town.

I wish there had been more thought into designing the route around the city. The applies to I-675 in Dayton. If you're heading to Springfield its a great route. Otherwise it doesn't alleviate traffic congestion on I-75.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
