Here's an article talking about the 6 month anniversary of the Tide from a Washington, DC blog.

Ride The Tide of light rail, Virginia Beach

In the article, the author includes his dream map of the Tide going to the VB oceanfront.
http://g.co/maps/pk53j
I have to admit that i didn't think of cutting through the trailer park to get to the VB Convention Center. It makes sense. BTW, besides the normal naysayers, the commenters talk about the possible routes to the Naval Base.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Nothing new really going up but a few closures to report in Ghent.

Ghent Auto Care/BP station is all taped up and closed. Gas was overpriced but it did work in a pinch and they had a free air pump for tires.

Rita's on 21st is closed. The signage is completely gone.

The Boot closed a month or so ago. The owners said they wanted to try new things or something.

There still seems to be a dearth of businesses on 21st. Really wish 201 Twenty One would fill up with more shops. Chipotle seems to be off to a busy start though so that is good news, at least for the tax revenue it will generate. Probably not so good for Machismo or Moe's.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

As for the ridership numbers they're proposing? Pie in the sky. They say at a minimum 6k riders a day, I bet its 2/3 of that MINIMUM number. Sure it'll be a novelty at first for some people, but that will quickly wear-off. You will not get people standing in 85-100 degree heat and humidity for 10-15 mins on a daily basis 6 months out of the year to ride something that covers such a limited area; and having to pay something approaching $3 a round trip to boot.

So I correctly predicted the ridership numbers, and that's still 2/3 of what they said would be the minimum (6k) 4.5 year ago. It's wonderful when you can look like a hero by moving the goal posts a year before startup and then exceed that number cause you've reduced it to some ridicously low figure. As for my last sentence, well.... when you subsidize the cost of a pass to the tune $10/year then that has the effect of artificially bumping your numbers up and destroying your revenue. Wonder how the taxpayers of Norfolk are going to react when they start seeing the net annual operating costs come in each year and realize increased coffee and slurpee sales tax doesn't cover the difference. Wonder whether they would want 2500 paying full fare or 4000 paying next to nothing, $10/yr is a pretty amazing deal to businesses.

In reference to the arena proposal, Waterside is not the place for it, however Norfolk needs a stadium better than Scope. I went to the Tool concert at Hampton Coliseum Friday night and that arena is so bad. Small bathrooms, even smaller concession stands, awkward seating, and bad acoustics. Hampton Roads needs a big arena. Period.

Forget redirecting taxpayer money to build huge stadiums for egotistical overpaid sports stars.

Been a while.

I just saw a show at the Scope not that long ago (Tiesto.) I'm trying to remember if the acoustics were that bad. I'm sure it could be deadened if people cared. I also saw Rise Against at the Ted. It was my first time at the Ted, and it was smaller than I expected.

Years ago I heard insurance was the reason that bands didn't play the Scope so much.

Scope is interesting. Friends and myself are in the middle of working on renting it. Unfortunately the city signed an exclusive deal with Ticketmaster and it could kill the works, so the event might move somewhere else. Who knows.

It's always fun to look back at old buildings, but there is a HUGE downside to them. Energy efficiency, layout, pillars, floor loading, on and on. Mold. Disease. Leaks.

It's wild looking at MacArthur library, and how they kind of destroyed it for no good reason that I can see.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

More plans for ODU coming soon:

"Dear ODU Community,
Over the past few years, the new residence halls on the Quad, the Student Recreation Center and the Learning Commons and Student Success Center at Perry Library, were giant strides forward in realizing this vision.
These additions will help secure our vision of ODU as a forward-focused university with state-of-the art facilities designed to enhance student success, foster achievements in research and cultivate artistic endeavors, all in a safe and pleasant environment.
I guess what I mean is, you would have a need to suggest a "build it and they will come" type of development.
I do not see art as a huge thing around here, but then again, I do not look for it either. It just seems like a stretch that the local gov. would give it anything thought. I do not want to talk bad about anyone, however, none of them seem like they deal in art at all. Every time something this big is suggested, someone has some stake in it.

I don't know. I think art definitely has it's place Downtown. There is a large art following amongst the younger population. You just need to see the thousands of people that attend the Stockley Garden Art Festival and the new Art Everywhere downtown. Of course, you've also got D'Art Center in the Selden Arcade, which is dedicated to displaying art, as well as teaching it. The Chrysler Museum also has a poplur Glass-blowing exhibit that's been getting rave reviews and has drawn tons of visitors.

I think Norfolk should definitely capitalize on that interest, and the area near the Chrysler Museum just north of Brambleton, might be a good location to look at.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Not sure how one would "measure art activity" but I would say, if there is enough people in the city and region with money, and if there is enough things that promote art, then it should be easy to establish an area and put together a committee to creat a driving force for it. I will say, I remember the Boardwalk Art Walk being a huge event each year, and I would be shocked if a city that size didn't have some form of art community within it...even Omaha has a nice arts district in their downtown.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Then I guess the real question is, how do you measure art activity in the area to see if it is worth developing into an arts district. Or do you just do it and hope that it works out?

The Riverview Lofts are coming along fairly quickly. They appear to have most all of the windows in now. Will be nice to get some housing in Fort Norfolk other than the retirement center.
