Wow! I can't believe people are having an argument over a name. I'm happy to see the progress. I could care less about a name, and I believe i'm a very achieved person. I love what is going on here. If it gets to the point where I don't like it, then it's time for me to make a change. I don't worry about things I have no control over. None of should unless we want to live a miserable life. No offense intended to anyone.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

It has nothing to do with the old name, it is the fact they are renaming with a contrived name. Contrived is never good. The young hip crowd I meet in my travels (at least the ones with taste), eschew anything contrived. I guess the best way I can explain it, is that West End just became young and fun without being contrived. NOMA is simply trying to hard. If many of you are OK with contrived in downtown Greenville then enjoy it. It certainly is not what has made Greenville great these past several years.

What are you arguing is purely opinion and the argument itself is completely filled with logical fallacies. You cannot factually tell me that NoMa is contrived. And then going on to say "at least the ones with taste, eschew anything contrived" further weakens any argument you are trying to make. That statement shows that you only listen to people who are like minded, which makes you close minded. JHM felt they needed to rebrand because an outdated plaza is being renovated. The name, in their opinion, attracts attention and from what I see from discussion on here has done just that.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

The name was changed for a simple reason. It was old and outdated, just like the plaza. Just because you liked the name doesn't mean that everyone did and honestly I didn't even know it had a name. The new name, along with the new plaza and the One development, will attract the younger crowd that has moved on towards the West End. Names are changed all the time and unless you have some way to influence the developers ($), you probably won't get a say it the choice of name. Noma is short, distinct and makes it seem like a new place instead of the plain old plaza in front of the ugly Hyatt.

Both the Drive and the Road Warriors are great names as they tie into the automotive nature of the area. Additionally, both teams were new, not existing and had to be named.
Hyatt Plaza existed, and for whatever silly, small town, reason, was changed to NOMA. A silly change for no legit reason.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Changes are on the way for a busy part of Greenville County.

Private businesses and Furman University, along with Greenville County and the Department of Transportation, are teaming up to revitalize the seven-mile area between Furman University and downtown Greenville.

The effort is named the Poinsett District.

The first area the Poinsett District will focus on is the ¼- mile stretch between Hammet Road and Gantt Street. The goal is not just to beautify the neighborhood but to rejuvenate economic growth.

Greenville County Councilman Butch Kirven said, “At this point, all options are all the table.”

The group would like to see some of the neighborhood eyesores like the crumbling T-shirt factory and junk yard be sold and re-developed.

There are also plans for a park and to add signage and landscaping to encourage more walking and running on the sidewalks.

The preliminary plan will be presented at the Greenville County Council meeting Tuesday night.

There will also be a meeting about this plan at the Brutontown Community Center on Thursday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. and at the Happy Hearts Community Center in Washington Heights on Thursday, March 8 at 6 p.m.
Everyone can call it whatever they prefer, but "NoMa" sounds pretentious (out of place) and silly in my opinion. I plan to call it the "North Main Street plaza at the Hyatt," or simply, "the Hyatt plaza."

^ Exactly the point.

Greenville has never gone for cutsie names....it has always been a very direct city.....perhaps part of the German influence that is here. Greenville's direct attitude is one of the greatest parts of its charm.

With this redo, Hyatt Plaza suddenly becomes NOMA, so I guess with the redo of Piazza Bergamo, it should become PiBerg?

Sorry, attempts at cutsie names wreeks of trying too hard. Greenville has always been great at just being Greenville. If we need cutsie names and need to create intrigue, then we have a problem.

It will just be Hyatt Plaza to me.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I appreciate the pictures that they have already posted, but it looks like all they've done is exposed some of the original interiors. if it is going to be "totally" renovated by 2013, then they've got to get more than a handyman with a hammer...

Also, the other day, there was an article about a bill at the statehouse calling for tax incentives for buildings that have sat vacant for more than 5 years. They could be waiting on passage... don't know, but I would feel better about the project when ownership actually changes hands.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Ha! SCDOT has shown time and time again that they couldn't care less about pedestrian facilities on their roadways. Plus, they're broke.

You know how Pine changes between 3 and 2 lanes each way at East Main? Well, have it change at St. John and you can add pedestrian refuges at Pine & Main and Pine & St. John. That can be done with the current road width. There are several other possibilities, but this one is the simplest.

And I think the current no-left-turn onto E. Main from southbound Pine should remain. You can just turn left at St. John for thru-traffic, and then right on E. Main if you want to go anywhere on that tiny stretch of Main between St. John & Pine. We don't need unnecessary thru-traffic on that part of E. Main (that stretch should be road-dieted w/on-street parking anyway).

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Because Pine Street is also SC Highway 9, SCDOT owns that road. As a result, the State could buy the parcels on the northeast and southeast corners and the intersections could be widened. At first that sounds like a bad idea- making the distance that people have to walk to get across the intersection even longer. However, a slight widening would give you the ability to create a needed, dedicated left turn lane for southbound traffic and install a large, planted median which would allow for pedestrian refuge and actually improve that area for pedestrians. By breaking up a wide intersection in to smaller chunks, it can actually be quite comfortable for pedestrians to negotiate an intersection.

Great idea! And given the number of large trucks that use Pine Street to get from the Camp Croft area and Union County (Dollar General, Disney, etc.) to I-85, maybe SCDOT will take notice.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I haven't seen the new and improved Brown Street in person, but I'm sure it looks a lot different than last time I saw it.

As for other streets to use for a live music district, I think Augusta Street has a lot of potential and also has the advantage of being in the West End (which, to me, currently has a somewhat livelier vibe than city center). Several offshoots of Main, such as Broad Street and Washington, have potential too. Even Laurens Street, with the things going on there, could be fun.

I guess my biggest problem with Brown Street is the fact that, other than the surface lot, the short block is made even shorter by the wasted space taken up by the back of one building and an office building across the street with no available street frontage either.

I'm kind of excited for Brown Street and the streetscaping because private money follows public investment. Laurens and Brown are both becoming pedestrian streets with Main Street in the middle. What's the problem with trying to expand the pedestrian environment? Washington and Broad are too traveled for this type of streetscaping and they have already been redone in the past few years. I do, however, think that they should have just done regular sidewalks because those stained concrete places do not make the sidewalk look like a piano at all. Since Laurens and Brown are very short compared to the rest of the streets, it makes since to try and create these as pedestrian friendly streets in my opinion.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
