The P&C Business section had an article in today's edition discussing the redevelopment of the Millennium Building. The interior will offer up to 35,000 sq ft of commerical space and occupancy is possible by next fall. The developer, Weiner Real Estate Holdings, is quoted as saying there is strong interest from some national retailers. H&M and Walgreens are mentioned as prospective tenants. That proposed square grass "tower" entryway reminded me of a Walgreens. Maybe Walgreens on the 1st floor and H&M on the 2nd floor. Hopefully no Walgreens at all.

History Of Charleston/North Charleston?

I like the concept. Charleston and North Charleston would fare better if they were not competing with each other. For that reason, it makes a lot more sense for those two to merge. Mt Pleasant, Hannahan, etc are primarily residential suburbs. Most of the business and industry is in Charleston and North Charleston. It would be easy to set up boroughs (a-la New York) so that there remains some degree of autonomy in Charleston's various sections (which would do much to appease James Island and West Ashley).

Sadly, the premise is asking some politicians to voluntarily give up power. That hasn't happened in this country since the 1780s. While I'm not optimistic, I'll remain hopeful.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

BAR gave conceptual approval in March to convert the old Rivers Federal Bldg into a 120 room hotel. Last night, the developer went back to the BAR seeking approval for 41 additional rooms for a total of 161 rooms. Also, and I don't know the specifics, but the developer is requesting a height variance. I'm not sure if this is related to the 41 rooms and/or a rooftop lounge area. The developer is Dewberry Capital based in Atlanta. The firm's prinicipal executive and owner, John Dewberry, owns a second home in downtown Charleston. I do not know if the BAR approved the 41 rooms and height variance or not last evening.

Dewberry Capital has updated its website with its hotel conversion project of the old Rivers Federal Bldg. The project is scheduled for completion in the fall of this year. The hotel will in fact have a rooftop pool (and spa). I recently read in the P&C that the BAR is still reviewing the exterior treatment of the building in regard to the brick finish.

The Best Friend of Charleston train returning to Charleston:

The City recently released a RFP for the redevelopment of the City-owned East Shed building that is located next to The Children's Museum on the block bounded by King, Meeting, Ann and John Streets. This is a single-story historic building with approx 6,700 sq feet. The RFP in-part stipulates a 20 year lease of the building with the City contributing $1 million towards reconstruction costs. Reconstruction will also include an addition of a glass enclosed exhibit space at the John St. end of the East Shed to display the Best Friend train (currently on loan to Atlanta). The City wants a family-oriented restaurant developed on the Ann St end of the building. A new coutryard will be developed between the East Shed and The Children's Museum where the City is promoting the placement of Phillip Simons art display. Proposals must also include the construction a conference room that can be utilized by the City and CARTA for public transit related meetings. RFP responses are due back to the City by Feb 27 2012.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

A music store sounds nice, especially for King Street but I don't think for that particular space. I think something a little farther north past the Apple store would be better since it would probably fit in better there. The area from Apple to the old Saks is basically just all upscale mall retailers plus Gucci, LV.

I can't remember which block on King St where Fox Music used to be. I do remember I always parked in a lot right behind Fox and used the rear entrance to the store. That was a LONG time ago!

I just threw the idea of a music store out there as a suggestion to add some mix to the retail choices on King. I would be pleased to see a music store return to the peninsula regardless of location.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
