Yikes! That sounds about right though. What a waste of money and space this has turned out to be. Heck, at the very least it could have been a nice community green space.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I've always thought those were some cool buildings. Their architecture remind me of the ones put up by the Onion Flats developers here in Philadelphia that have been wildly popular. Here's a link to their site: http://www.onionflats.com/#/Work/

They've been really good for a few areas of the city, moving in to the edge of the gentrified and revitalized neighborhoods and cleaning out abandoned or run down row homes to build nice, quality apartments.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Someone should update the Nashville wikipedia page (I do not know how to do it) with our new Jan. 15, 2012 population estimates found here: http://www.bizjourna...=17789364184771

Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin area is now at 1,639,245 and moved up to 37th largest metro in the US from 38th in 2010.

There's been a whole discussion about how to properly display the populations, and whether or not to use the population of Davidson County or the balance population not including the semi-independent insular cities, so I'll hold off on making that change until that all is sorted out.

As for not knowing how to edit, it's really easy and straightforward. If you can post here, then you can definitely edit Wikipedia. Here's a short tutorial that will get you started: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

The Atlantic Cities Article On Nashville Sprawl

This improvement is coming about right now because of market forces. As energy becomes more expensive people will be a lot less likely to drive from Spring Hill or Lebanon and Dickson to jobs in the city. As traffic becomes worse they will be less likely to do the same. As housing options increase in the city and surrounding neighborhoods people are more likely to move into the city. Safety is also a factor, and as these neighborhoods gentrify that is another problem that fixes itself.

Changing a lifetime of sprawl takes a lot of time, but we are definitely on the right path. I think for the most part Nashville's developers are doing a fairly decent job in the city. The one good thing about having a ton of empty parking lots and abandoned buildings in the city is that there is a whole world of potential for new development.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I was too. I took a look at the criteria. The article states that "the index charts the concentration of working artists, musicians, writers, designers, and entertainers across metropolitan areas." Nashville's entertainment industry does employ a lot of folks in these categories: musicians/writers/designers/entertainers. Now the political bent of many of these individuals may not be "bohemian" depending on your point of view, but the census information doesn't count religious or political affiliation, just area of employment.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

On the topic of roundabouts, many of the historic town squares in communities surrounding Nashville function as a roundabout. One immediately thinks of Franklin, TN, but also Lebanon, TN. Glasgow, KY has a really nice town square like that. Even Centerville, TN functions that way. I always enjoy driving through the historic towns surrounding Nashville on my way to visit friends and family.

I used to go to the optician's office in Centerville, but that one still manages to confuse me somehow. Another interesting one around the courthouse square is in Waynesboro.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

In a way the hotel reminds me of an old-school U-shaped apartment building. I'm most disappointed that only one retail space is part of the development; the site had at least 8-10 businesses before.

I think that the comparison to a U-shaped apartment building is very appropriate. I agree: it does resemble a courtyard apartment building in shape. Plus, it does have a base, a middle (brick?) and a cap, which gives it a very traditional look that does harken back to the '20s, which is the era when this area was being developed anyway.

Homewood Suites hotels are toward the budget end of the Hilton portfolio, and in terms of their furnishings and interiors, they remind me of college dormitories. Some even offer beer as part of their evening buffet offerings! So the college dorm/apartment comparison kind of works on that level, too.

And compared to most of the hotels that face West End, this one is actually an improvement in terms of addressing the street. At least there is no parking lot in front on West End, and for crying out loud, at least there is no Qdoba stuck out front. It is a shame that there is not more actual retail, especially on the Elliston side, but the existing buildings did not address Ellison, either.

Other than losing the historic car dealership facade, I still think that this one is a step in the right direction for making West End more pedestrian friendly, even if only a baby step.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Surprised to see Nashville that high. I knew it was traditionally considered a pretty "bohemian" type of city, but wow, up there with LA, NYC, Toronto, Vancouver and DC. Of course, I'm also not surprised to see that Memphis is at the bottom. Does anyone actually still live there, or is it full of mannequins that the census bureau keeps mistaking for people? Okay, that was a little mean, but still, I really don't like that city...

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Good and bad news for Nashville in terms of sprawl and urban planning. The bad, the Nashville Metro area is the least dense, most sprawling metro in the nation. Its commuters log the most miles and longest commutes and if historical development patterns continue, the area will add some 365,000 acres of formerly rural land to its urban sprawl-scrape by 2035. However, The Nashville area Metropolitan Planning organization has come up with a plan to condense that development to a more reasonable area as well as a host of other smart, sustainable features as it plans for the future of the region.

Because the sites are so different in size. I don't blame the architects; they merely deliver what the developer client demands. The failure here is more with the city ordinances. Rather than requiring actual storefronts on Elliston/24th Avenue, what's required is a taller first floor, and window glazing that creates the 'appearance' of storefronts. On sites such as the FYE site, ground floor retail/restaurant space should be required as part of any new development, but it isn't. As far as the new Homewood Suites, I think they did a decent job considering the demands of cars and the people who will stay at this hotel. Granted, it's ugly, but the goal was to mimic Vanderbilt's architecture. In a way the hotel reminds me of an old-school U-shaped apartment building. I'm most disappointed that only one retail space is part of the development; the site had at least 8-10 businesses before.
