There are several residentail high-rise projects that have been proposed recently rangeing from 17-41 levels. Hopefully more information will be out about them soon.

Austin is definately one of the South's boomtowns.  Is it safe to assume that its economy has fully recovered from the Dot com bust, from a couple of years ago?

Construction began in February
Located next to a future commuter rail stop, it is the first transit oriented development in Central Texas.

Yes, Capitol Metro already owns the rail line and voters approved funding for upgrades last November. More info on this thread.

Austin American-Statesman article: 3 residential projects set for downtown Austin

Quote

Three new residential projects could bring up to 200 condos to the west end of downtown Austin and more than 200 residential units to the Red River club district on the east side.

Greystar, a South Carolina-based apartment developer, plans to break ground before the end of the year on the Red River Flats, a 120-unit upscale apartment complex on the old Reddy Ice site at Red River and East Ninth streets.

Across Red River, another developer is planning to build Neches Oak Tower, an eight-story mixed-use complex with 117 residential units.

The largest of the three projects would rise west of Congress Avenue at the northwest corner of West Sixth Street and West Avenue, where Austin-based Cypress Realty Inc. plans to build a mid-rise project with condos and retail space.

Greystar's project would bring life to a city block that has sat dormant since 1999 as other developers tried and failed to build on the site.

Greystar's plans call for four levels of apartments over four levels of parking, including two below ground.

Developers say they hope to turn the site, which has been an eyesore, into a catalyst for other residential and retail development.

The Joneses are part of a surge of 1,400 people who have taken up residence in seven downtown condo and apartment projects that have been built over the past five years in Austin's city core. And a new wave of development is forming that promises to bring at least 14 additional projects and more than 2,000 new residents.

These new projects will dramatically alter the city's skyline and redefine downtown's limits, stretching its boundaries both east and west. Several projects will bring towers that will rival and even eclipse the office buildings that line Congress Avenue.

The flood of new residents also is expected to bring restaurants and clubs plus new shops and other businesses to serve a swelling population that would push past 8,500.

An article from todays Statesman saying plans have been unvieled for two downtown projects. The first is MetLife's 27-story high rise that will contain 196 apartmants. They hope to break ground this fall and have it ready for residence to move in by early 2007. The other project is the Red River Lofts. It will be a four story U-shaped building with 122 apartment units. Construction is expected to begin in late fall - early winter and ready for move in by August 2006.

Has anyone been able to see the renderings for 101 Congress yet (the MetLife building)?  I know that the arch showed the city council a slideshow of the renderings.  I'm a lil anxious about this one because I honestly didn't think it was going to happen.
