Hampton Roads' hospitality industry scrambles to fill jobs

From Colonial Williamsburg to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, more innkeepers and restaurateurs are hanging a sign alongside “Vacancy” or “Kids eat free.”
It reads: “Help wanted.”
The hospitality industry faces what may experts call a critical shortage of workers over the next few years as it continues to rebound from the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorism attacks while struggling to recruit new labor.
And with the approach of the summer travel season, those in Hampton Roads’ tourism community say the dearth of employees could be devastating to a business that lives and dies by its service to guests.
“It behooves us to get the best quality of people we can,” said Pam Lingle of the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is sponsoring its first tourism and hospitality industry job fair Friday.
