Ah, if only Orlando had something resembling Fenway Park and the brownstones lining Commonwealth Ave...

Maybe the Marlins would consider moving if Miami can't fund a new ballpark :)

The Sanctuary is looking good and I didn't realize the Star tower had a sign up.  Nice!

Awesome pics! Downtown still looks rather sleepy, even w/the current construction. I think those pics show the calm before the storm...2006 will be the year of the cranes!

When was the library built???  Does anyone have an explanation as to WHY it looks so... um...  UGLY?  Cost issues?

Damn thing looks like a hurricane / fallout shelter!

Any chance that it'll be "refurbished" to fit into the whole "city beautiful" idea?  Hell, I'd even take another (F)BBARCH building instead of this one!

The Orlando Public Library was designed by Brutalist architect Johanson (sp?).  I for one think its a great design considering the style.

Brutalist architecture in Orlando, though?  I'm not a fan of that style, so maybe it's just me, but I think the building doesn't fit very well...

^well brutalist architecture in any city doesn't exactly "fit" in, thats why it was in large part, a huge failure.  I personally think this is one of the finest examples of the brutalist style, and I think it actually fits in quite nicely, all things considered.  I do understand how something could dislike this building though..

I like the way they're spiffing up the interior of the library. Brutalist exterior notwithstanding, there's no reason the inside has to be dark and dreary.

Actually, it's kinda tucked into the corner between the main ballroom and the cheyenne saloon.  The entrance is right next to the main ballroom entrance.

Agree, once you get inside (and past the constant presence of homeless people hanging by the door) its actually pretty nice.  It's by far one of my favorite libraries and I'm really happy to have such a large and well-kept library so close to home.

Once construction on the Plaza gets just a few floors higher, it is going to make such a huge impact. Really exciting to watch. Thanks to everyone who keeps posting pictures.
