That may be the opening of the Gallery Belleau (Wickenden) expansion I posted about above...  That's exactly what he does...

Yes, I'm pretty sure that is exactly what it is. There's been some issues on Atwells lately that aren't so good, but there's a handful of galleries, 17 Peck moved from Downcity among others, that is creating quite the little art scene, Wickenden West if you will.

Change at the Coin-o-matic: Sub shop to open

The end of Coin-o-Matic is the latest in the slow deterioration of the mob and its long-standing influence on Federal Hill.

Last week my truck was in the shop and had to walk home from the train station. As I was passing by the Bank of America on Atwells I saw two "ladies" dumping all kinds of trash out of their car right on to the street. There was a trash can about 10 ft away. I thought I was going to loose my mind.

When I confronted them they just stared at me with this "who me?" look. I like to think that if Raymond Sr. was sitting across the street he would have had them both "whacked" and disposed of at the Johnston landfill.

I heard a rumor yesterday that Hooters is looking at the empty space next to Atwells Mini Mart. I don't have anything against Hooters (tacky certainly has its place in the world) but would rather not see chains invade FH. Next thing you know there will be a GAP and TGIF on Atwells between rt 95 and rt 10.

I know there is not a lot of love for FH, spurning historic district status and all, but I think most would agree with me on this point.

I happen to love Federal Hill and think it's one of the biggest selling points of Providence. Sure, it's a tourist area, full of obnoxious JWU students, and always filled with suburbanites and their cars. But none of that makes it less important than any other part of Providence. I used to be a resident up there and considered Atwells my neighborhood. It had everything I needed... restaurants, shops, food, and Walgreens... and it had me close enough to downtown without having to pay the much higher rent to live downtown.

I agree with you and would not want to see chain restaurants on Federal Hill, especially on Atwells or Broadway. This chain in particular belongs on Allens Ave, North Main near the Pawtucket line, or somewhere in the Silver Spring/Smithfield Ave area. It should not be in the heart of the city.

Good article. The comments are a bit odd. How does having strip clubs make PVD a dump? I think they give PVD a certain something that most cities lack.

Would love a Hooters in Providence, dont have to drive out to the Airport. Still, dont believe Atwells ave is the right spot for it. Next to the Dunk would be perfect. Maybe make Trinity step up its game, or at least clean the place.

Just put a Hooters sign on the Sportsman's Inn and get them to start serving wings.
