Songkhran is the Thai New Year. It corresponds to the hottest month of the year as well. So the water fights are kind of fun and practical. From what I understand the celebration has really been toned down in recent years. But it is pretty amazing - in Bangkok there were trucks moving about the city with groups of people throwing water on all the cars they came across. A lot of fun for everyone.
