McAllen has been the fastest-growing out of this bunch, no?

Yes and no

It is the fastest growing metro between 2000-2005
McAllen-Edinburg-Pharr +16.04%
Laredo +14.05%
Brownsville-Harlingen +11.39%

But not the fastest growing city of those listed between 2000-2004
Brownsville +13.31%
Laredo +13.11%
McAllen +11.87%

Well, I live in Tyler, but I think Longview (which is of almost equivalent size and only about 50 miles away) is just a little bit nicer. I think it probably won't take too long for Longview to catch and surpass Tyler.

I never would have expected to see someone say they prefer Longview over Tyler.

My personal preference, of the few cities in this list I've visited, would be Tyler. I've always thought it was a decent place and I loved the fact that, until recently, its zoo was free. :D

My wife would probably vote for Midland/Odessa, given she grew up there.

The Bryan College Station area tops the list IMHO...its a great place to live.

Bryan-College Station is two cities that's connected at the hip so really its like one city. Bryan has more diversity than College Station and a downtown that just looks better every time I'm through there and College Station is not only one of the best places to live in Texas is 1 of the safest cities and 1 of the smartest cities in the country. Some neighborhoods in B/CS are awesome like Signature Park, Cooper Field, Castle Gates, Pebble Creek and the Texas A&M golf course "Traditions" in Bryan, those home on that site is awesome they just was  featured in the Southern Living Magazine for best home in the south. Only 90 minutes from Houston 100 miles from Austin 175 from Dallas and 165 from San Antonio, I'd pick B/CS

College Station is a good place to build a super mall like the Mall of the Americas.  It's location is central to SA, Austin and Houston.  It's perfect.

Corpus is pretty big to be considered even mid-sized, but it has a lot to offer and is a good jumping-off point to the coast. New Braunfels is a nice, smaller place and is close to both Austin and San Antonio.

I've always liked Galveston.  Corpus Christi is a nice city, but Galveston has a lot of charm.  Even with the destruction of the hurricanes, Galveston has managed to retain much of its history.

I am biased because I used to live there, but I like the Midland/Odessa area.  If you like isolation, there you have it, but the airport is a link to civilization.  You're not too far from some pretty neat things like Carlsbad (okay it's not that close, I know) and Davis mountains.  Downtown Midland is a pretty nice surprise as well.

Don't really miss the tumbleweeds or the dust storms though.
