There was a third next to the old Ingles in Travelers Rest...until the second attempt at a new Eckards opened on HWY 25.

Does anyone know the story behind what happened with the first attempt  on HWY 276 in T.R. ?  Skyliner, I believe, said that there was a beautiful old victorian home there at one time.  Then it was torn down and the Eckards was built, but never occupied.  I'm curious as to what happened there.  I think that site would make a nice home for the T.R. Police Department, should they ever decide to relocate from City Hall due to space constraints.

That first attempt was suppose to be a Rite Aid.  It is indeed a good location.  JC Penney bought out Rite Aid, branded it as Eckerd, and sold off both Rite Aid and Eckerd chains.  Whoever bought the old Eckerd in Traveler's Rest made the mistake not to move into the new store, and sales suffered tremendously, mostly because of CVS's new freestanding store at US 25 @ Little Texas Rd.

Thanks, BoDragon!  That fills me in a little more on the history there and it makes sense.  Eckard has since built a new store on the corner of US 25 and State Park Road (across from Burger King).  It's a shame that the site on US 276 remains vacant though.

It is also a shame to remain in an outdated location to pay high rent and notice sharply declining sales.  I'm glad this has been resolved with a new store finally.

The question to ask is what to do with that 276 site.  I do not know if the building is intact.  If it is move in ready for another drugstore, I could see Walgreen's making a move.

Any idea who is taking those spots at the Greenville Mall?  Would be great if one was Bass Pro Shops.

I certainly hope so.  If they land at Greenville Mall, I will definitely be among their first applicants.  You cannot beat the thrill of having a Bass Pro Shops in town anywhere.

Wow- new anchors at Greenville Mall?  I'd really be interested in any bits of knowledge about this!

Before anything goes into Montgomery Ward, I wish someone would put up turn signals at that mall entrance in front of Nutrica.  There's too much oncoming traffic there which makes it impossible to turn.  I have to go up to The Shops @ Greenville Mall enterance to park near the mall.

It is already featured on deadmalls.com!

I'm glad.  What are the new anchors?  Hopefully something in line with the mall's upscale past.

While this is true, deadmalls.com is just a website and doesn't control any of these malls. I am not sure who the anchors are, but I am definetly glad to hear this news.

deadmalls works mostly on submissions from what I can tell.

Lets wait and see what the anchors are before we say its not dead.

Still think Greenville Mall should be leveled and this prime piece of property redeveloped in a new urbanist town center style with shopping, hotel, living.
Malls are dying around the country.  Unless the mall is a large regional mall (ie: Haywood), malls don't seem to have much life left.  If the new anchors are some cheesy, low rent anchors, then I say kill Greenville Mall and use the property for something spectacular.

Or...

And this is just a crazy idea, I know...

Raize the Greenville Mall and re-build it from the ground up - bigger, newer, and better than ever.  Two stories, maybe even three with a very rustic decor inside to reflect the surrounding area.  There'd have to be a large parking deck, of course - this could perhaps be the first floor even...build the mall on top of it.

Then, replace Haywood Mall with an Urbanist Town Center or another Lifestyle type shopping center.

Kinda outlandish, especially considering the rennovations going on at Haywood Mall now, I know.

Apparently the lifestyle center at Greenville Mall idea was considered; Southeast Real Estate Business has an article on this as well:

http://www.dmra.biz/...eenvilletc.html

Who knows why it didn't make it into the execution phase; G'ville Mall could have avoided deadmalls.com fame if it had.  Maybe that description of "abandoned" department stores and a "futile" attempt to compete with Haywood scared off other investors?

Both ideas are nice. I just hate to think of an area as big as Greenville only having one mall.
