(Providence, RI) -- A joint campaign designed to unite residents of three wards in Providence will be launched today. Organizers says that "Community First" has been created as a response to a pair of what they describe as significant threats to working-class families in the Southside, Elmwood, Washington Park and the Jewelry District. The threats are identified as displacement due to the rising costs of housing, and divisions based on race and nationality. Today participants will go door-to-door to discuss with residents of wards 9, 10 and 11, issues like affordable housing, education, and jobs.

Anyone know anything about this project?  Certainly positive news on the affordable housing front.

We've been hearing a lot on the forum about bad design and things that we don't like.  I thought I would post links to Housing Network RI's website which prove that affordable, well-designed newly constructed urban housing can be created and that there are organizations and people doing good work.  Hopefully their work can be replicated elsewhere.  I have no ties to these projects.  Just thought we needed some positive posts today.

I thought this article about Elmwood was a good excuse as any to give this thread a bump.

Some South Providence related items on the Feb 12 Zoning agenda:

This first one is on Pavilion Ave, a few steps east of Prairie Ave (Lower South Providence):

Quote

MUSLIM COMMUNITY CENTER OF RHODE ISLAND, OWNER AND EXCEL DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION, APPLICANT: 224-236 Pavilion Avenue, Lots 94, 95, 96 & 97 on the Tax Assessor’s Plat 57 located in a Residential R-3 Three-Family Zone; to be relieved from Sections 304, 416.4 and 703.2 in the proposed demolition of the existing two-family structure and the construction of a new 48’ x 68’ building to be used for religious services, which is a permitted use within the
R-3 district. The applicant is requesting a dimensional variance from regulations governing the front and rear yard provisions, and the height restriction. Additional relief is sought from the parking requirement related to the number of on-site parking spaces, whereby 40 parking spaces are required, 19 spaces would be provided. The lots in question total approximately 16,000 square feet of land area.

This next one is on Thurbers Avenue between Rugby Street and Ocean Street (Lower South Providence).  There is currently no structure on the site of this proposed project:

Quote

SWAP, INC. & SWAP COMMUNITY LAND TRUST: 6-20 Baffin Court & 201-213 Thurbers Avenue, Lots 302, 303, 304, 305, 306 & 802 on the Tax Assessor’s Plat 54 located in a Residential R-3 Three-Family Zone; to be relieved from Sections 303-use code 14 and 304 in the proposed construction of a new two-story 8,982 square foot building
that would contain 22 dwelling units of elderly housing. This proposal is in compliance with the parking requirement. The
applicant is requesting a use variance for this multi-family use in the R-3 district, and further relief from regulations governing front yard setbacks, a dimensional variance. The lots in question contain approximately 29,027 square feet of land area.

What a shame!

The partners took over the historic diner at 777 Elmwood Ave., on the city’s South Side, in August 2007 and have been making a name for themselves with a menu that features local ingredients.

I was very angry about this...  I'm going to try to get over there for lunch tomorrow...

You'd certainly never know there was a revival going on reading surveys like this in the paper.  How sad.

SWAP to build its first elderly housing project. Affordable-housing developer SWAP Inc. is planning to break ground Monday on its first elderly housing project. “This is SWAP’s first foray into elderly housing, so we are excited,” said Carla DeStefano, executive director of SWAP (Stop Wasting Abandoned Property.)

Case No. 09-002MA – 175 Broad Street (Public Informational Meeting)
Request for Master Plan stage approval for the proposed commercial  development of the property located at 175 Broad Street. The subject  property is bounded by Service Road No. 7, Broad Street and Cahir  Street (AP 24, Lot 603). (continued from the CPC meeting on April 21,  2009) (Upper South
  Providence)

Does anyone know anything more  about the 175 Broad Street Project? I can't find anymore information on  it besides what's listed above. It looks as though it's been brought up in at least two meetings so far; I'm hoping someone was in attendance  and might remember what the developers proposal is.

Or where else could this be looked into?

  Thanks,
