The presentation to the PHDC was basically a status report on the issues facing the environmental remediation and redevelopment of the site.  The purpose of the presentation was to inform the PHDC that to clean up the site the building may have to be demolished.  The property is under agreement to a partnership of Brownfields Redevelopment Inc and SWAP Inc.  the hope is that a clean up and development plan will be in place by the early FALL.

Thanks Thom for the info! It would be great to see something come of this!

Historic Louttit Laundry to fall to wrecking ball.

Demolition has been approved for the former Louttit Laundry, a historic building on Cranston Street that preservationists have tried to save for more than a decade.Posted Image

it may take years to get what you actually want, but suspected arson wins out in the end.   burn it down, wait a few years and put up some schlockey strip mall in the end.  woo-hoo.

Looks like they're starting to demolish Loutit. There's some heavy equipment (one of those excavators with a jackhammer on the arm) back there now and it looks like they've been tearing at the roof.

I don't remember seeing the excavator a couple days ago, although I did notice that the vegetation had been trimmed back so I'm sure I would have noticed it if it were there.

My money is on the ever popular "nuthin" - A building style that Providence has really taken to new levels in the past couple years.

I'm putting my money on a parking lot for the new field house going up at Central High school. Have you seen that mess. We don't have money for textbooks but we can build a field house that rivals the Patriots training facility.

It's actually more than just a field house, it's the new Providence Career and Technical school.  The few comments I've heard about this project have been negative. Do you have kids going to public schools in Providence?

Hopefully all this talk from the Obama campaign about giving money to cities for public projects will mean lots of federal funding for our school system revamping plans in addition to the much-needed road work.

Negative as in as a smart reasonable fellow your assessment is that it is negative based on what you've heard/been told; or negative as in all you hear is people complain about it and you're wondering why?

I'm wondering where the money is coming from, it is certainly shocking hearing the state of the budget and the tenuousness of our school system that a new school is being built. But I'm all for more and better schools. This project has been so quiet, I really know next to nothing about it.

I know precious little about this building, but I do know that technical training is really important to economic development right about now. If that's what they're building, it might just be a good investment - all built-environment issues notwithstanding. That said, I'm sure there are other ways to skin that cat...

SWAP has the development rights on that site.  I'm pretty sure the plan is mixed use residential/business.
