Thanks for posting the info. Very interesting that more than one-third (8/23) of Texas cities over 100,000 are in the DFW Metroplex. I wonder which city will be the 4th in TX with 1 million...Austin, FW, or El Paso. I think all 3 will make it in time, giving TX a whopping SIX cities with 1 million+ people!     :w00t:

It did jump out to me too how many cities in the Metroplex were over 100,000. That is an interest question that you brought up about the next city to reach 1 million. I've never thought about it, my first reaction is Austin. But looking closer at the growth rates I think its to close to call right now. You are right though, they will all make it there eventually.

I think it will go in this order
Fort Worth
Austin
El Paso
this shouldn't happen for another 20-30 years tho.

I am in no means an expert on Texas, but I was still surprised there were a couple of cities on that list I wasn't even familiar with.  I was curious though why aren't some of those cities considered a part of the Dallas metro?  That and I guess I also thought that Texarkana would have 100,000 in it's metro when you included the Arkansas side.

I read something on the internet about Houston passing up Chicago in city population in the near future. With the growth Houston is seeing that seems very possible, i was there in June and it seemed there was 100 new things popping up since my last trip there in January. But does anyone know when Houston is projected to pass up Chicago?

Okay, so I'm a little late... :whistling: ...I just realized we're missing Garland on this list. Garland had a 2004 pop of 215,768, so we need to slip it in there between Plano and Lubbock...so that makes 9/24 or 37.5% in Dallas-Ft. Worth!   ;)

Hey, you did a great job with the list!    I'm a bit of a numbers nerd, and I LOVE demographics, pop stats, etc! I just did something similar for South Carolina cities, and man was that a job!! I had it all PURDY on my spreadsheet and my web site...posted it on the forum and it was a jumbled up mess!    It took me a few hours to figure out how to make it look decent on the forum!

Nice job on the SC numbers, some were quite suprising. I feel your pain on trying to get everything to line up in the forum post, it took me a few tries.

I enjoy studying population stats as well.  I try to look at regional/county stats rather than focusing on municipal boundaries.  You have to remember that Metroplex cities annex almost everything, including agricultural lands.  If the city of Houston annexed all the residential land it could, it would boast 3+ million.  The political geography of the Metroplex and the Valley is extremely different from other Texas urban areas.

Gosh, there are so many factors!  I guess you could divide these totals by city area to gather some density data...phew, I'm too tired to do that tonight, though.

I just wonder what the Katrina-influenced figures will look like next year.  That should be interesting!
