Palmetto Center dorms becoming a reality.
A developer’s proposal to put some 800 college students in a largely vacant office building on Main Street in downtown Columbia cleared a major hurdle Tuesday night when City Council voted to approve a zoning change for most of downtown.
The zoning change would allow the developer to create four-unit apartments within the 21-story Palmetto Center building in the 1400 block of Main Street. Currently, a building in that section of downtown can only have three people living in a common rented space.

I was thinking Chick-fil-a as well... college students love it. This will actually be great for Main Street especially if a lot of the students walk to class. Even if only half walk the short walk to class, that would be 400 trips each way. Could help support a lot of retail.

Main Street, which has seen resurgence in the arts and retail, is getting another boost in housing.
Developer Ben Arnold on Wednesday opened the doors of The Palms, a Miami-style apartment building in the old Rodeway Inn at the corner of Main and Lady streets.
The Palms is the second apartment development on Main Street to be built since the end of the worst recession in 80 years, joining the Lofts at Lourie’s above Mast General Store, which opened last fall. And a developer is working to turn the 21-story Palmetto Center into dorms for USC students.
