Hugh the Barber's move back into the John Marshall Hotel building on November 17th may be celebrated as a gala affair, according to reports.  In fact, it MAY be held in one of the former ballrooms where a cadre of former Virginia Governors and VIP's among the black-tie crowd will subject Hugh to a sort of affectionate 'roast'.

This is not verifiable, but some say over 250 possible tenants have expressed interest in the 238 apartments available in the complex.

The rooftop sign has been remounted and is once again illuminated.

Gold gilt is being applied to the 5th Street entrance.

Meanwhile, the 3-story section wrapping around 6th and Franklin is still without a wall in the alley separating the building from Berry Burk, but heavy construction activity is evident.

The Greater Richmond Association for Commercial Real Estate toured the John Marshall Residences -- or at least the ballroom and portions of the lobby level.

Apartments will be ready in December.

The Barber, Hugh Cambell, will be moving back into his old 8-chair space in The John Marshall on December 1st.  It is on the Franklin Street side of the old hotel and will have a street entrance as well as an entry from the lobby.

Apartment rentals range between $755 for studios to $2,900 for 2 bedroom units.

Construction delays at The John Marshall have caused considerable distress for wedding planners, potential residents and others hoping to book activities in the building.

However, "The Sweet & Savory Christmas Tea" which I wrote about today at the bottom of page 204 in the Richmond Dining Out thread is still on schedule for 1PM on Saturday (12/10/11.

This story is from today's Richmond biz sense:

Was taking the gf to see the lights downtown at the James Center when we drove by the JM.  They moved the construction fence away from the entrance so we got a closer look....

The renovations and rehab look incredible.  What a difference.  I only snapped this shot while driving by, but I'm going to try and get a closer look the next time I'm down that way.

Wow. $2900/mo for the 2br really pushes this into the upper tiers of the most expensive rental units in downtown Richmond.

For comparison, top-floor 1br and 2br units in Miller and Roads are asking in the $1800 range. There's a high floor (17th) 2br unit at Vistas on the James that's asking $2200 and another 2br in the same building asking $1800.

Here's a video and story from today's RTD of the Residences at The John Marshall.  There are two ballrooms -- The Marshall Room just off the lobby to your left as you enter the building from 5th Street, and the larger one called The Virginia Room on the lobby floor toward  6th Street.

It looks as if the old hotel, now called The Residences at The John Marshall, is just about ready for occupany by apartment dwellers.  As of today, 51 tenants have signed leases in the 238-unit building.

While new residents move into the spanking new apartments on upper floors, it appears The Residences at The John Marshall is launching itself as a new downtown entertainment center.

Its considerable size and capacity could put it in music hall competition with The National, Richmond CenterStage and Capital Ale House.

On Saturday, February 11th, from 7:30PM until 1AM, a group called THE LOVE BOAT LAND CRUISE will be performing in The Virginia Room which is the larger of the former hotel's ballrooms.

Wow. The Virginia Ballroom is much LARGER than I expected..... this certainly WILL create fierce competition with some of Richmond's premier music halls (and bars )
I can't wait for all of these restorations to these skyscrapers finish! By the next census, we could be seeing 500-1000+ new people  . Now, we just have to find someone to help out with CNB. Just THINK of all of the opportunities RVA will have opened if and when they have restored THAT :shok: !

Hugh Campbell, the barber, got "roasted" last Wednesday night in one of the ballrooms at The John Marshall.

He's very close to moving back into the building -- finally!

Harry Kollatz has an excellent story in the March issue of Richmond Magazine about The John Marshall Residences and its history.

Enjoy.
