I agree, the widening of 52 should be a top priority for Winston. I think this is one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the state and should come before building a loop. As for Greensboro I would just like to see them finish what they are buiding now.

In my opinion, the NE section of the loop (meaning hwy 29/future 785 to hwy 70... the existing loop) should receive funding sooner than later.  As the eastern Guilford County area grows, more traffic will be spilled onto 421, bus 85/40, wendover, etc to get to 29 going north towards va.  getting this project over with sooner could help those inevitable problems later.  i think the portion of the loop from battleground to 29 could wait, though.

I think this is the last section that needs funding. The southeastern leg is complete and construction is underway on the southwest and west loop near Bryan Blvd and the airport. half the loop will be complete with in the next few years. There is a massive "maze like" urban interchange under construction now where the loop crosses I-40 in west Greensboro.

So do I, but there is a heavy population in that area and Battleground does need some relief.

I disagree. An area that is already populated in NW Greensboro, needs alternatives to get around Greensboro and beyond. NE Guilford is not populated at all and to my knowledge, i dont think the area is growing at this time however an argument could be made to bypass US 29 through Greensboro. I still believe, in fairness to the taxpayers of NW & SW Guilford county deserve the NW/SW quadrants (for local mobility) to be built first then the NE quadrant last (to avoid death valley later).

I think the northwest and Northeast should get funded soon. Northwest is congested and maybe that segment should be built first. but the northeast segment is important because it will be part of the I-785 leg. Highway 29 is being upgraded to interstate standards.

What's the deal with the lighting on I-40? They installed lighting on the exit/entrance ramps last year, and I have yet to see them turned on. They also have provisions to install them in the median divider, like the ones in Burlington. It would be nice to have good lighting on 40, like Charlotte does on I-85.

Too much money that the DOT doesn't want to shell out is the only reason I could think of. The plans were to have the lighting going all the way up and down the middle plus the light ploes were included in the budget for the widening. Go figure?

I think once the Painter Blvd (aka the I-40 bypass connection to the I-85 bypass) construction is fully completed, i believe the NCDOT will install lighting along the highway through its multilane portions between NC 68 and High Point Road. I guess it is just me and i did not say this in the Raleigh forum about I-440 but I have no problem with no lighting along the freeways in the state because my eyes are used to pitch darkness for night driving.

Guess its all what your used to

Memory is not serving me very well on this one so im not sure  :(

I do know that last time i was on I-277, the lights were out and it was pretty dark considering that i was right next to center city Charlotte.

The PTI/68 interchange at I-40 does have lighting, and it's usually on.

That stretch near the airport is so WIDE! It is like Atlanta or something. I do like the road a whole lot better than what it currently looked like with 4 lanes and a guardrail median.

Ohhhh yes, how could i forget that stretch of I-40? It was the NUMBER 1 traffic report every single morning on 98.7 FM (formely Kiss FM, The Point. Think its called the The Zone now right?) and the Good Morning Show. Does anybody remember that traffic reporters name from the early 90s at WFMY? This was the time when Tom Britt was at WTVD back then, not at WGHPiedmont 8. The brothers of corn were alive and doing very well back then: Don Ross, Roy Ackland and Cecil Chandler :D

Actually 98.7 has gone from KISS to Zone to currently nor Simon "We play everting." Alot of the news stations around here change their traffic reporters so often but the one that seems to keep them for a long time is WGHP. I will never forget when my dad took me to Raleigh for the first time and we were in the car listening to the radio and the traffic report came on on Oldies 93 and the name of their traffic watcher was "Sky Angel Karen."   I though how stupid of a name that was to be broadcasted over the entire area.

If you look at the center concrete wall on I-40 in west Greensboro you'll notice that every so many yards there are holes like for highway lights. I dont know why they dont have the lights there. they need them.

I realize this may not be the correct forum to address this in but as a user of UP I know how knowledgeable its members are. So any help would be greatly appreciated.  If you can help please PM me. I work for traffic.com we provide live traffic information to the media and other clients.  We are starting coverage for the triad soon and it just so happens to be my responsibility.  I was wondering if anybody could tell me the exit numbers and names for Business 85.  I have found so much conflicting information.  I’m pretty sure it runs between 85 SW of Lexington and 85 E of Greensboro. What I have been able to gather is as follows.

•85 Split
•Holden Rd. (#121)
•US-220 (#122)
•Rehobeth Church Rd. (#122C)
•I-40 (#36A)
•Randleman Rd. (#36)
•Elm-Eugene St. (#37)
•US-421 (#38)
•US-29 (#39)
•Hwy-6/Lee St. (#41)
•McConnell Rd (#43)
•I-840 (#44)
•Joins back with 85/40

I’m sure there is some error here because I have received some information from the NCDOT that there are exits numbered 16 (Green St.), 17 (Surrett Dr.), and 18 (Main St.) all of these being in High Point.

The Holden Road, US-220, and Rehobeth Church Road exit numbers are wrong. I'm not sure what they're supposed to be.

The section between I-85 and South Main in Lexington has numbered exit's probley because of its duplex with US 52. I will try to find you the exit numbers if I can.
