Well, you can illegally download it, get it from your university, or pay a whole bunch of money for it.  If none of those are options, I recommend photoshop elements.  It does most of what photoshop does for less than $100.

If you want a free image editor, use the Gimp.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I've heard about that one (GIMP), too.

Is it as good as photoshop?

BTW: I also have a Kodak Photo Editor on my computer which could help.

I haven't used the Gimp for anything other than resizing or putting copyright info on my photos, so I'm not very experienced with it.  It did what I needed it to do, although I didn't like the interface much.  It works pretty good for a free program.  Download it and see how it works for you...it's not that difficult to learn the basic stuff.

I haven't used Kodak image editor, so I'm totally clueless there.  I do know that this computer had some image editing software on it when I got it, but I don't know what it's called, and I've never used it....

ironchapman, you can download photoshop CS2 free and use it for 30 days.  Before you do, you must become an adobe user.  Being a user, you can try all of adobe's products at no charge.  What is unusual though, is that you can usually keep downloading the trial version over and over again after it expires.  So essentially, you have a legal copy, but aren't paying lol.  (I don't know if this still works). Of course, I no longer use the trial versions.  Let's just say I have some strong connections in the architecture school.  ;).  But back on topic, nice thread Allan.  This will help for people not to familiar with the D.

Haha, I didn't know that about Adobe.  It would be a pain but it if it saves you $600....

At least it's not like Autodesk Revit...that thing is the most overpriced program on the planet.  For $4700 it can be yours!  My uncle's architecture firm was going to upgrade the whole office to it, but it cost so much money that they only did half.

This thread is so incredibly off topic.  Eventually I'll clean it up a bit so only the profile-related posts are on here.

Heh, you should see the Atlanta profile. Many of the posts are all that remains of chris121091's 10,000 alteregos.

Actually, it's not that far off topic. This could be educational for those of us who will be doing (more) profiles in the future :)

BTW: Have you any plans to create a GR or Lansing, or is joeDowntown going to do that?

I don't have the time or the energy to do so.  I am taking an insane course load this semester, so I won't be around nearly as much, and I may disappear for several days at a time if things get too crazy.

If someone else wants to tackle the other Michigan cities, they can go ahead and do that.  Otherwise I'll get to them when the semester is over.

Allan,

I was checking my logs and found this thread. I wanted to thank you for linking to my site. If you have a logo or graphic you want used I can/will put up a link on my site to here.

I was just looking over your flikr photos, you have some good stuff. I dabble at, actually I throw money at new stuff in hopes I take better pictures. Hasn’t worked out so well to this point..

Photoshop is considered the "gold standard" I guess and you pay through the nose for it. There are others for under a 100 that can do most of what Photoshop achieves

JASC Paint Shop Pro 8™
Ulead PhotoImpact 10™ (coming out with 11 soon)
Photoshop elements 2.0™

Microsoft has one also. I guess unless you make money at photography it is kind of hard to justify the legal ($400+) version of Photoshop.

You know, there certainly seems to be a lot of city profiles being posted lately. I don't seem to remember any except for Cotuit's being posted (December, 04) up until I did that profile of Atlanta (back in late June). Dd I spark something? Or did everyone here just suddenly find a lot of time on their hands?

Congrats on 6000 posts, too, Allan. :w00t:

The Detroit profile was started about this time last year.  Nobody really got that serious about the city profile thing until recently.

Good work Allan, but I was wondering why you didn't add University of Detroit Mercy's sports to the Sports section. And for that matter Wayne States too, both are in the NCAA. UDM is NCAA DIV 1 and Wayne St. is NCAA DIV 2.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere but I love this video about Detroit in the 1960's.

Enjoy!
