More and more high-priced neighborhoods are being built in south Augusta.

Some people now want to form a South Augusta Development Authority. To market the area to developers.

''David Moretz, a commercial realty agent for Rex Property & Construction Management in Augusta, said developers and restaurateurs, when deciding where to locate, look at average household incomes, traffic counts and how existing businesses are performing. The consistently-packed Applebee's could bode well for south Augusta, he said.''

South Augusta city wants more options

How far do I want to drive?

It's one many south Augusta residents ask themselves because of the dearth of retail and restaurant options in the city's fastest-growing area. 110,000 people who live in south Augusta

''Mr. Sias' proposed development authority would cover all the territory south of Gordon Highway and the Belair Road area west of Bobby Jones Expressway. The estimated average household income in that area is $43,499, according to DemographicsNow. In comparison, the average household income in the areas where most new retail is steering is $65,484 in west Augusta and $77,439 in Columbia County.''
There are pockets of greater affluence in south Augusta, though. The census tract that includes Willis Foreman Road and Diamond Lakes Regional Park has an estimated average household income of $50,092, and it's estimated at $49,890 for the tract that includes Meadowbrook Drive.

''Gayla Moore, a vice president with Meybohm Realtors Now, homes rival those in Columbia County, she said, noting that homes in one new subdivision, the Lakes at Spirit Creek, run in the upper-$200,000s to $300,000 range.''

South Augusta could easily support bookstores, coffee houses, retail, et cetera.  It's ridiculous how developers refuse to look to the southside except when the want to add nother Dollar General or fast food restaurant.

Major growth about to occur in south augusta/burke county

Southern Co. announced today that it has filed a federal application to build and operate two new nuclear reactors at the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant.

The addition of two new reactors would create thousands of temporary construction jobs and double the plant's full-time employment to nearly 1,800.

Rumor Mill:  There's a rumor going around that a new shopping center is coming to South Augusta on Highway 56 that will include a Super Walmart and a Home Depot.  Again this is just a rumor.  What does everyonne think about this?

Havent heard this rumor but sounds great.  I think South Augusta could use more than just the Lowes on Peach Orchard rd. and the Walmart on Deans Bridge.

Wha do you guys think about proposed South Augusta Authority? The agncy would try to bring businesses to the south Augusta area in the same fashion the DDA does for downtown. I think this would spread our influence further into Burke Co. Via Hephzibah, Goshen and Blyth.

New tire facility in Augusta.

The project will result in 30 new jobs and an investment of more than $4 million.

Construction will be immediately on the new facility which will be located near the intersection of Gordon Highway and Bobby Jones Expressway (Interstate 520) on Noland Drive in south Augusta.

The company considered consolidating the business near Columbia but says they choose to stay in Augusta because of the workforce and transportation system.
