TLC and partners filmed two episodes in Charlotte several years ago. MEDIC will proably not allow 'Paramedics' to return because of the fiasco that resulted from the crews riding in our trucks. As with all shows like this, the producers hype the metropolitan aspects of the city. If you haven't seen the two episodes then they might interest you.

Uh oh... what kind of fiasco? Was it just a hassle or were the crews getting in the way ot what? I hope there weren't any serious problems!

Well without getting into the gritty details, the whole system was burdened by the multiple film crews riding on the ambulances. When TLC comes to film, they send several cameramen on different units so they can capture the most amount of footage. The reason many EMS and police services don't allow shows to film is because the demeanor of the filmed crew changes. They tend to not pay attention to what they are doing and do a lot of over acting, much to the determent of the patients. For example, when TLC filmed in Charlotte, we had a paramedic "caught on film" walking a patient who had been shot multiple times in the abdomen when that practice contradicts our standing protocols. What this does is basically embarrass the organization and expose operational deficiencies within the system. Mecklenburg EMS Agency, being a spin doctor organization, did not take kindly to those types of negative exposure. We also had a paramedic travel across town with his lights and siren on so he could make it to the premiere of the show. We as medics, have the type of job that is not compatible with distractions and other various interferences. I liken it to taking kindergarteners on a field trip. All hell can break loose and the discipline you would find in a classroom is lost. As a side note, a crew in Oklahoma was filmed calling an elderly patient "sweetie", and was fired a week later. When the film crews come to town it is truly a fiasco.

You know come to think of it I say it on TLC back in 99 I though it was good show. it had some nice skyline shots
