ha... yeah, that hasn't really held true in a half-century or so.  I think a better nickname for Grand Rapids would be something like AMWAY.

Amway isn't even HQ'd in the City...

Windy city is probably most recognizable but I like "city of broad shoulders", "city that works" or the Second City better.

I was surprised someone earlier didn't know that Motown was Detroit.  That was a great sound that came out of Detroit in the 60's, and you still hear it everywhere -- it defined an era and is timeless.

I'm from St. Louis, and I hear,

Gateway City, or Gateway to the West
Mound City (in the old days -- used to be a lot of Indian Burial Mounds)
Pain Court (Original name for the city.)
The Lou (from hometown rappers Nellie and Chingy)

I'm really not trying to be biased, but Motown and MotorCity are insantly identifiable and a brand.  Motown is actually a play on "Motor Town."

K-town

I always call Kalamazoo, "Abrakadabrah".  Imagine marketing that on downtown banners.  "The Abrakadabrah City".  [/wierd]

I'm surprised no one mentioned Minneapolis:

The City of Lakes:

This comes from the Dakota word Minne (meaning water) and Polis (Greek for city).
That's where the word Minnesota comes from:  Minne-water and Sota-clear/sky colored.

The Mini Apple (This one speaks for itself).

The mill city (being the top producer of flour in the world until about 1920).

Minneapolis and St. Paul together:  The Twin Cities (They aren't really twins, as they are two distinct cities, but they are so close together).

The Cities (as referred to by anyone not living in 'the cities' but lives in Minnesota).

wichita- "Air Capitol (of the World)"

Airplane Capitol..that is...the most aviation going on?? the most airplane manufacturing going on...and or the most airplanes built...or somehow a combination or all of them.

"Air Capitol" is an abbreviation of that...it's not that they have more AIR in Kansas than anywhere else in the world..lol
