Ziwei Mall
Xi'an - China

Design Completion: 2003
Building Area :
- Total, 5 000,000m2
- Retail, 3 000,000m2
- Residential, 2 000,000m2
Architect: Aedas Architects

This large project combines three fundamentally different retail experiences into an overall master plan complimented by a residential population. The retail components are: Home store and furniture market, “Standard” retail shopping mall with entertainment/ food and beverage, and an exterior shopping street. The project also has a mid-sized exhibition area with supporting hotel and business center.

The site is located at the intersection of two large city arteries. The positioning of the retail focuses out toward this corner to try and maximize visibility and frontage for the retailers. Equally important to the success of this project was for the different retailing components ability to leverage the audience from the complimenting retail. The shopping street becomes this “glue” which ties the project together with flow being continuous and uninterrupted throughout the site. Intermixed with this is a contemporary notion of mixed use residential dwellings which help this development achieve a 24 hour, 365 day year cycle which provides a mutually beneficial relationship to both retailer and resident.

Qingdao Grand Theatre
Qingdao - China

On 19 December 2004, the municipality of Qingdao announced publicly that gmp has won the international architectural competition for the Qingdao Grand Theatre for which twelve international architectural partnerships had been invited to submit their designs. gmp won the competition without having to revise their project.

Against the backdrop of the Loashan massif, the new theatre is part of Qingdao’s new cultural mile or axis which stretches to the wide bay on the Yellow Sea which in 2006 will be the venue of the Olympic sailing regattas.

The programme of the cultural complex includes an opera house seating an audience of 1600; a concert hall seating 1200; a multi-purpose hall seating up to 500 people; a hotel with 300 beds and a musical information and education centre.

The jury especially appreciated the fact that the public terraces of the large cultural building relate to and reflect the slopes of the Laoshan massif. They are covered by a "flowing" roof which opens the view to the Laoshan mountain range and to the sea.

Construction of the complex with an investment volume of 68 million euros is to start at the end of 2005.

Marriott Hotel
Ningbo - China

The building project is part of the redevelopment of the western embankment of the Yuyao River running through the city centre of Ningbo.
The 150 m high tower block with a gross floor area of 73,000 m˛ protrudes the Ningbo skyline and becomes the new landmark of the striving economic region located south of Shanghai.

The concept for the building on Heyi Road generates its form from two curved elements, which are connected in their centre, thereby generating the shape of an X. The central axis of the building is positioned at right angles to the river embankment, thus stating its relationship to the river. The glazed centre accommodates the tower core with the serving functions. A two-storeyed recess defines the upper part of the tower. The building accommodates a five-star Marriott Hotel with more than 325 rooms, ranging from the generous King Room to the Presidential Suites. Office areas and commercial facilities are planned along the embankment promenade. The new design of the landscape park forms part of the planning.

The completion of the tower block is scheduled for mid 2007.
