No.  Not at all.  Route 2 in Warwick is an entirely auto-centric wasteland, that's why it has limits to it's capacity.  IF traffic in Providence gets bad enough, I'll be happy, it'll force people to start considering other ways of getting to/around the city.

Maybe at rush hour things might be a tiny bit more congested, but for the most part, people choosing to live in these places aren't going to drive from the Westin 2 to the PPAC or the new 1 Financial Starbucks...  I think the impact will be minimal and, as glassandsteel pointed out, if things get too dense, the nature of downtown allows for mass transit options.

RI Mall make "deadmalls.com"

Warwick Beacon story

As much as it is dead, it does have Kohls, Sears and Wal-Mart they alone should keep the place open.  I think the way it is right now is usual for what it is.  You can go to the DMV, or go to any of those 3 stores which a lot of people love to do.

They need to figure out what the hell they want this place to be.  If they want a strip mall, then level the inside of the mall and add more big box stores in between Walmart and Sears.  If they want a mall mall, then open up Walmart and Kohls into the mall to get some foot traffic in there.  The situation now, however, is just odd.

Personally I think they should blow up the interior and transform the site into a little town center with some parking garages and housing, so long as they finally get some transit running to it.  It could be the state's first real attempt at a TOD.  And then once Warwick Mall dies out, they can do the same with that site and have a nice little riverfront town.

I think the problem is that it is exactly what they want it to be - nothing. Stop and shop only cares about crippleing Walmart and has to greater interest than to keep them from expanding. One thing I didnt know though is that S&S only leases the space. I thought that had bought it. It actually made its way only deadmalls.com quite a while ago (like a couple years). I love deadmalls - all sorts of cool info. Im also big into labelscar.com - they have some great deadmall info and feature a SWEET Zayre asterisk in their logo.

It is a smart/machiavelian maneuver on Stop & Shop's part to thwart Walmart's expansion. Unfortunately it is at the cost, directly or indirectly, of the stability of the RI Mall.

What is a TOD? Sorry, but I missed the memo. Thanks in advance for clarifying this.

A place to gather, but where to shop?
Rhode Island Mall has 68 storefronts, few tenants

Customers typically have no problem finding parking spaces at the Rhode Island Mall.  Many of the mall’s interior storefronts are
vacant.
