The Jefferson County Commission voted last night to provide $7 million dollars over five years to purchase Red Mountain Park.

In other news, the Friends of Shades Mountain have expressed interest in preserving the sloping face of Red Mountain.  Sounds like a great plan.

this is what i get for moving to arizona - great projects like this finally start getting some big discourse in my favorite city. i'd love to have a stake in it, instead of watching from afar.

lots of fighting ahead, unless the lead-up to building these projects bucks history. i hope it will.

You can always move back... or at least fly back often to visit.

The plans for the Red Mountain Park has been made public.  It is a very impressive plans for the 4.5 mile park along the mountainous ridge from Homewood to Midfield.  It would include a 6.7 mile bike/walking trail loop around the reecreational areas.  There are also plans for connect the park with the Vulcan Trail and Shades Creek Greenway.

I'm not really sure.  I'm kind of surprised they stayed away from this topic at the meeting on the 24th.  I got an  email about a month or so ago from them saying half of the $7 million had been secured.  Perhaps I'll try to get in touch again.

Apparently, there is nothing that can be really said about the land trust purchase because the deadline has passed and there is still not enough donations for the Freshwater Land Trust to purchase the land.

However, this article in the Sunday edition of the Birmingham News shows that the group has given up and has requested an extension:

The Final Draft meeting is tonight at the museum auditorium, where they are supposed to sign the lease on the property.  5:30-7:00.

Hope to see y'all there!

BUT, I know the funding hasn't come through because of our wonderful local government, so I doubt there will be any signing... but at least come out and see the master plan.

It looks like the Red Mountain Park commission is going to buy the land for the park.  I am glad this project is closer to becoming a reality; it will be larger than Central Park in NYC.

Yeah, I kind of cornered the mayor and said how nice it was for him to finally show up to a meeting.  He smiled and didn't catch my sarcasm, but I was glad to hear that he, as well as the commission, fully supports the park.  It was also nice to see both Fox and NBC news cover the story for the 10pm news.

Good lord, people, let's please, just once, finish something good for the city.

I'm shocked! :shok:  But for once I am glad they have proven my assumption wrong and actually executed something on time.

I just pray that BJCC Board can do the same by March and come up with a REAL Plan B with a scaled back sports arena (up to NBA standards) and an expansion to the exhibition space.
