This is great news for Harris County. Just wish one of the suppliers would locate in Columbus, but i guess C-town is a little to far from the main plant when so much open land is near West Point.

Everything located within 2 miles of I-85.  Harris' location of it's industrial park was very wise, as was Chambers'... first exit out of Lee County on I-85.

Some signs of development are begining in ChattCo at the new Red Oak Plantation subdivision(s) as reported in the Tri-County Journal.  It will be contract building which doesn't happen as fast as spec homes, but maybe that'll change as the BRAC population gets closer.

The GRAAL Group 1,700 acre security training facility in Marion Countyis having to go through the rezoning procedure again.  They evidently have the proper public notifications.  The development in Marion County is about 20 miles north of small town Buena Vista and about 10 miles from Columbus' eastern boundary.  WRBL story here.  The group and county have already initiated a new process to follow the zoning laws.  The judge didn't rule on the 'merits' of the zoning so, presumably, it'll be approved after the new process.

Details are:
GRAAL Group Security Training Complex
250 jobs - about 40 from local pop.
1,700 acres
10,594sf HQ
28,875 student/Guest dorms
7,414 training/classroom center
Urban assault village
2.5 mile driving track
Shooting facilities

Update: The Venue Project is well underway. More details - City of Valley, Chambers County Industrial Development Authority, Greater Valley Development Group, and Crossman & Co. are developing 70 acres 938 apartments, more than 350,000 sf of retail space and a hotel. The Vistas - 128 condos; and, Verandas 602 luxury apartments and Crest Club, 208 deluxe and corporate apartments. A Hampton in is also part of the project.  Hampton is almost complete. Not much word on the retail yet. This will really help to consolidate the I-85 corridor as its own economic engine. There are a couple of site plans for the retail:

West Points growth related to Kia. In addition to the 4,800 jobs coming to this tiny town, there are several residential and commercial developments planned both on the Troup and Harris sides:

Early proposals call for several large parcels of commercial and residential development.

• The Villages at Harris Creek: 222.53 acres, 524 residential units and 6.3 commercial acres proposed. Civil plans are being reviewed for phase one, 35 lots. Grading should begin by mid-January.

• The Riverfront at West Point: 127.41 acres, 200 single family homes and 398 townhomes proposed. Construction could start in early spring.

• Little Creek Station: 189.68 acres, grading has been completed on eight outparcels and an entrance and street is paved. Developers recently closed on a deal with Holiday Inn Express.

• West Point Village: 80 acres. Cleaning and grubbing is complete on the property and grading should begin in January.

• Northwest Harris business park: 376 acres. Johnson Controls and Daehan Solutions, two Kia suppliers, are under construction and Express Materials already is operating in the park.

• 55 acres, being developed by Barry Spofford. Work should begin on outparcels by spring

That is great news. The whole Columbus-LaGrange corridor is really starting to explode with growth. I am glad to see these projects move forward in these bad economic times.

They are taking of more slowly, according to Sammy Osborn, West Point's planner. But this is really the Lagrange to Opelika-Auburn I-85 corridor.

A Marriott Courtyard with meeting space planned for downtown Lagrange is still active, but hasn't been given a specific start date due to the downturned economy. The hotel is to go at Lafayette Pkwy and Main St.  Lagrange Daily News article here.

Marion County is expecting 276 in new population from BRAC.  476 in the next 15 years total. Our leadership needs to push the concept of the Benning Byass. Until this, Alabama will continue to experience the bulk of the cities new suburban growth...

LaGrange, GA is annexing nearly 1,000 acres on its southern side, and west of I-85. No word yet on what's planned for the property. They do typically have a development reason for annexing, though.
