Here's an article from today's Courant. Look's like Bradley is set to have another record year. It's definately a positive trend whether or not we end up with transatlantic service.

I don't know what's going on when the definite plans are concerned, but I am excited to say that I was going through the airports website and stumbled across a map that shows what the airport supposedly submitted to the FAA for approval and might I say it's nothing like the model they have at the airport. The plan calls for 3 stages.

The first stage (2006-2009) calls for an expansion of the F.I.S. building, and new Air Cargo aprons and buildings near to where the new control tower is located. The second stage (2009-2013) includes the demolition of the Murphy terminal, an expansion of the parking garage almost reaching the F.I.S. building, and the construction of 2 new concourses west of the present-day US Airways/United concourse. It looks a lot like D.C. National. If I had to guess by looking at it....after everything is completed Bradley would have around 50 gates. Finally, there's the thrid and final stage (2014-2024), which is mainly centered around new taxiways and the closure of Runways 1/19.

Now I don't know if this is still the plan the airport is presently running with because this was last updated on October, 7th of last year, but I sure hope that it is. I've posted the link to the pdf page below.

Bradley International Airport Master Plan

Very intresting - thanks for sharing.  I think Bradley has huge potential as an alternative to Logan and JFK/Newark not to mention becoming a "hub" to central New England.

Good for them, good for Hartford.

Now if they would just stop saying "welcome to Hartford/Springfield" when you land unless MA wants to kick in some cash subsidy.  ;)

As long as the DOT runs Bradley it will underperform.

They screwed up the new addition by putting all the services on the gate side of security.  You can't even get a cup of coffee if you don't have a ticket. That's completely opposite of Reagan National Airport which has virtuallly all the ammenities outside of security.

Get the DOT away from Bradley.

Any projects for more public transportation to the airport.  Having to take a cab is awfully expensive, even though it is regulated!

Any news concerning Trans-Atlantic flights for Bradley? How are discussions with KLM Royal Dutch and Lufthansa going? And what do you think the most likely canidate is for flights to London?

Any flights to London would have to go to Gatwick, and Heathrow is more known for their European connections so I doubt we would see a London flight. If anything, the startup company that was considering doing London flights would be the best bet, however with how things are going in the industry I doubt we will see it any time soon.

it would be more likley to see BDL get service from KLM or possibly Lufthansa. KLM could to 767 service over the pond so there really wouldn't need to be a huge plane on the route, possibly evan a 757 with Icelandair through their capital city with connections onto more European destinations would work also.

what equipment would Lufthansa use? And does anyone see JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, and/or other airlines starting up service to Bradley? Or is the domestic market for new flights to Bradley non-existent?

I think the best bet for any new domestic airline would be Frontier. Service to Denver is under served, no non stop flights since after 9/11 when United cut the only N/S flight in the market. Jetblue probably will eventually serve BDL within the next 5-10 years, don't think any sooner. Once they get into the Florida point to point market more, BDL would be a good choice for them. JFK is simply to close to justify non stops because it would only serve as a connection point. Possibly they would also add another west coast destination out of BDL or maybe San Juan.

Spirit I would consider very doubtful, they are simply too small of a airline and not very well known.

On another note American Airlines has said that they plan on stoping service to PVD. They will still serve Chicago from PVD with American Eagle, but mainline will be gone from PVD come April. I wouldn't expect the same to happen at BDL simply because it is a much bigger business destination, and San Juan is a very good market for them out of BDL.

I think Frontier would be an awesome addition to Bradley, and as far as Jet Blue goes....what about non-stop service to Oakland? Bradley doesn't have San Francisco Bay area non-stop anymore. It would definitely be a needed addition to Bradley.

Jetblue to Oakland would work, it is a easy connection into downtown San Francisco. Airport to downtown only takes about 45 mins on bart. However I don't see Jetblue starting service at BDL with only one flight. I would think they would add BDL if they planed on adding Florida routes and San Juan out of BDL which are both big markets from BDL.

what about service to the following cities....New Orleans, Seattle, San Diego, Austin, San Antonio, Kansas City, Omaha, Denver, and Memphis? All of them are major cities that Bradley does not currently fly to.

I remember reading about it once, but does anybody know the estimated amount of people that live in Connecticut who travel to Europe every year?

I seem to recall the number 300 per day from the BDL market area thrown around last year - enough to fill at least one jet to Europe daily.

I think San Antonio would be a good choice - it is the 9th biggest city in the U.S., and like Hartford has a large Hispanic population.

I would love for San Antonio to be added to Bradley's non-stop list. The problem is finding an airline that agrees with us. I think Southwest would be best suited for the job because of their intense network in the Texas region.

The article says that Bradley hit 7.4 million, but the statistics given are 20,000 away from being 7.4....what gives? And when will the official record of 2005 be out at ACI-NA?

You know, BDL is missing the boat on one huge thing..... Vermont skiing.  Bradley could easily market itself as the easiest, fastest way to get to Vermont skiing.  Some smart entrepreneur should start daily shuttles to each resort to and from Bradley, maybe even twice daily shuttles for the busier resorts.  They could peddle their services to some of the bigger Travel Agencies and services, and really get the market going....
