Awesome. I'll bet 2008 will be another big year in job growth too with all of the retail that will be open by then. I wonder what the population of the metro area will be in 2010?

Yeah, I saw that also.
I guess any jobs are good, but those didn't sound like they would be high paying.

These announcements have taken place within the past 30 days in Aiken County:
Bridgestone Firestone North America Tire, LLC recently announced that it will invest at least $33 million in its Aiken, S.C., tire plant over the next four years to add new production equipment as well as retool existing equipment. With its announcement in January of a $17 million plant upgrade, the company will be investing at least $50 million in the Aiken County tire facility over five years. Most recently the plant added a new mixer, modified its tire assembly system and hired 36 new teammates.
Global Investment Recovery, Inc., an international recycler of computers, telecommunications equipment, consumer electronics, and classified military electronics, has completed the acquisition of a 65,000 square foot facility in Salley, S.C. and began recycling operations in July 2006. Due to the increasing demand for electronics recycling, the Company has also agreed to lease an additional 60,000 square foot facility to expand this new operation. Global has converted the former Salley Manufacturing Plant to a modern electronics recycling facility including a state-of-the-art 400 HP shredding system.
Newman Technology South Carolina Inc. recently broke ground on a $4 million facility expansion that will enable it to increase capacity and create 40 new jobs. Located in the Ventures Industrial Park in Aiken, S.C., the new building will provide an additional 47,000 square feet of operating capacity.

Great developments. Thanks for the link Krazee. Canuk, I agree with you. Those call center jobs (for the most part) do not pay much and they have high turnover from what I've heard.

According to Channel 12 News, the mayor has stated that another major announcement on the same scale as ADP will be made this Friday which will mean a lot of new jobs for the area.

Employment in the Augusta-Aiken area increased by 600 jobs, or three-tenths of 1 percent, from 216,300 to 216,900 during February, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
Speedy Printing Center has merged with Streeter Printing & Graphics Inc. and will relocate its Milledgeville Road operation into Streeter's building at 1467 Broad St. by April 1.
The owner of the Oxford Learning franchise in Chesapeake, Va., has acquired the Evans franchise at 4536 Washington Road, the tutoring chain announced Thursday.
The Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau will receive $147,000 from the city of Augusta for 27 wayfinding, or directional, signs that are designed to guide visitors to the city. Augusta commissioners on Tuesday approved the funds for "Welcome to Augusta" signs to improve city corridors and gateways and provide uniformity for directional signs countywide. The 27 signs, along with the 17 signs already under construction for downtown attractions and major corridors, will be completed in early April. The entire project is estimated at $240,000.
BAE Systems' Aiken plant will be involved in the manufacture of more than 400 six-wheeled mine-resistant and ambush-protected vehicles for the Army and Marine Corps. Maryland-based BAE Systems Inc. received a $715 million Defense Department contract Wednesday to build 5,000 vehicles to be delivered by the end of the year. A segment of that contract, $234 million, involves the production of a vehicle the company calls its RG33. BAE Systems has 300 employees and 91 contract workers in Aiken. Last year, it leased the former Avondale Distribution Center in Sage Mill Industrial Park to house an expansion to produce engine compartments for mine-resistant vehicles.

The city of Augusta was ranked by MSNBC last week in the top 9% of employment growth in the USA and the top 20% in recession recovery.
Development Authority of Richmond County Executive Director Walt Sprouse said in a press release, “The Augusta area continues to put up impressive numbers concerning the local economy. Augusta is (a) the 23rd Strongest Economy in the United States, (b) the 6th Strongest Building Market for Housing in the United States, © the 21st Best Housing Market in the United States, (d) 79th out of 392 metro areas in the United States for Economic Health during the nationwide recession, and (e) #36 out of 392 metro areas in the United States for Employment Growth.
