I had heard that the owners were seeking permission from the city to raze and rebuild, but I wasn't sure what ever became of that.  I've always found this corner building in particular to be interesting.  I see people going into and coming from that building fairly often, which is suprising given its dilapidated state and its outward appearance.

if i'm correct i believe The Army Navy Store uses the corner building for some storage and all their foam rubber cutting and such.  I know they at least used to.

I had just always figured it was an art studio or that the CIA was running some sort of counter-terrorism initiative from in there...

It is occupied by the best anti-terrorism force the USA has -- loyal armed citizens.

Thank you for that great info, sc smitty!  I had hoped to see new buildings replace some of these eyesores.  It is just way too prime to allow them to be a hole along the path to and from the new ballpark.

Thanks, scsmitty! That would be great to have a 4 story building there and to close that gap between these buildings and the next set. this is a vital corner for sure. Maybe a department store or something big like that would be nice on the bottom floor. Similar to what's trying to take place at Main and Washington. But possibly something more like the Mast General Store- meaning maybe not so typical and national, but more unique and something that would attract people... yet wouldn't compete so much with the local shops that are so vital to the West End.  :)

Something unique ... OR ... perhaps a CVS, Walgreens, or Eckerd on the first floor that is designed in such a way to fit in with the architecture and era of the buildings around it...and also somewhat old-fashioned on the inside, complete with an ice cream counter and a soda jerk.

that wouldn't be such a bad idea...maybe make it something similar to the old Lewis Plaza pharmacy,  with a little diner and everything....

In any case it needs to be UNIQUE.  Something at that location should be prominent.

It appears that the building torn down on S. Main is this.

It was just past Sworn Denim, no?  Isn't this where that empty lot is now?

Do the radical environmental organizations disagree with a building being torn down if it has a tree growing out of it? :)

Melvin does indeed own a barbecue place in Charleston.  It's on Folly Road on James Island.  I believe Maurice does too.  I have seen a Bessenger's in West Ashley not too far from I-526.
A little late on the reply here... but there is also a Melvin's BBQ on Mount Pleasant on Northcutt Rd.

There is a "Bessinger's BBQ" or something to the effect (with a different name than Melvin's) on Savannah Hwy, but I am not sure what the story is with that one.

Some upcoming things to look forward to in the West End:

Quote

The City of Greenville Design & Preservation Commission (DPC) will hold a Public Hearing on Thursday, March 2, 2006, at 4:00 p.m. in the 1st floor meeting room at City Hall, for the purpose of considering the following applications. (Note: Items are listed in the order they will appear on the agenda.)

...

CA 06-14 A request by Elliot Fowler of Oyster's LLC for a certificate of appropriateness to make exterior changes to two buildings and install a rooftop deck at 11 West Camperdown Way in the Central Business District.

CA 06-15 A request by Steve Mack of STM Acquisition & Development for a Certificate of Appropriateness to demolish historic buildings at 702 and 708 S. Main Street in the West End Preservation Overlay District and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

CA 06-16 A request by Tim Shellenberger of DLR Group for a Certificate of Appropriateness to install a pylon sign at the new municipal baseball stadium located at 945 S. Main Street in the West End Preservation Overlay District.

The rooftop deck will be at the new Oyster Bar across from RiverPlace.

702 South Main is the big green building on the corner of South Main Street and River Street.  708 is the one just to the left of 702, both shown in this photo posted previously by SC Smitty:

I'm not so sure I like the idea of a Pylon sign at the West End Ballpark.  Maybe a low monument-style sign?  I suppose it depends on what the sign will look like and how large it will be.

^  Ok, there's a little building attached to the back of the green building with a smiley dog face and the word "Frosty" painted on the side.  I love this little building....would it be demolished too?

I know the part of the building you're talking about.  You even took a photo and posted it to the "Greenville Kitsch" photo thread, I believe.  I'm not entirely sure, but I suspect it would be demolished with the rest of that building.

gsupstate, you might be able to "steal" it before demolition starts.  Or you could ask for a few souveniers from the rubble.  Either way, I expect it will come down with the other buildings surrounding it.

I like the sound of a deck on top of the oyster bar.

Hope the new ballpark sign is a real stunner. :shades:

Ugh, hope it's not one of those flashy distracting signs. To much frill for this area after all the work that has been done to blend it in with the older style.

The deck sounds positively inviting!

I read somewhere about the tour of the ballfield but couldn't ask at the time, how can I join in on that? Is it over?

Maybe someone can call me at work today and let me know? 233-2661
Thanks,
Suzanne
