There appears to be room for 8 lanes through anderson, greenville, and spartanburg.  If not then they can make room.

Haha, they COULD do anything, but don't forget how long it took then to add one lane last time! It didn't earn the moniker: "the perpetual widening of I-85" for nothing. :)

Interstate plan revealed today
Anderson Independent-Mail (SC)

It seems the preliminary plans for teh new lanes are available for viewing.

As the entire widening project ends at the South Carolina state line, the Tugaloo River, will both states be responsible for building the new bridge(s) over the river?

wow, I-85 is looking like it Will be at least six lanes from Durham to Atlanta before 2020.  all of the remaining 4 lane portions are now under construction or planned for widening to atleast 8 lanes.  All that I can think of is I-85 west of Gastonia to near the Spartanburg and the area southwest of Anderson.  This is great news! no section of I-85 between Durham and Atlanta should be 4 lanes.

Needed, but I don't know if we'll see it by 2020.  The very overloaded and outdated sections of 85 between Gaffney & Kings Mtn, and between Salisbury & Lexington won't happen for a long time.

I dont think its going to start anytime soon.  About 6 months ago I noticed some construction going on on about 20 miles from just after Commerce to close to Lavonia.  They put up those traffic nets in the median and looks like they spent alot of money doing it so I cant see them tearing that down in the close future.

They are tearing up 85 north of the 985 split. Maybe its just preliminary, but there it sure looks like part of a widening effort.
