Honolulu has a new radio station: Energy 101, a low-power FM station at 101.1 FM with a signal that reaches metro Honolulu, east to Ala Moana and west to Pearlridge.

However, it's possible to receive its signal on the Windward side, from Waimanalo to Kahalu'u, depending on your radio. Listeners have been able to catch the station from the Likelike and Pali highways on car radios.

The station plays dance music. Its formal call letters are KXRG-LP.

For now, the FCC limits its broadcasts from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily.

"We have a dance hits format. We play the current most popular dance hits based on airplay and club play, as well as many of the biggest dance hits from the past," said Jay Dietz, president of 'Ohana Broadcasters, a nonprofit organization that operates the station.

The station is one of only nine stations in the nation programming all-dance music. It is also O'ahu's first low-power station, a new class of licensed broadcast stations governed by the FCC since 2000.

The station's playlist includes tracks from established and new acts, including Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You," Madonna's "Sorry," the Eurythmics' "I've Got a Life," Shakira's "Don't Bother," Ashlee Simpson's "Boyfriend," Mynt's "Still Not Sorry," Gorillaz's "Dare," INXS' "Pretty Vegas" and Mariah Carey's "Don't Forget About Us."

Listeners can buy or download all the music on the air via iTunes or a partnership with CD Universe and Amazon.com.

Dietz said the commercial-free niche station is aimed at teens and young adults, ages 14 to 35.

"Our signal comes in loud and clear, all over the most congested parts of the city," Dietz said.

*Amazing, for a city of under a million its trully has an urban vibe of a bigger city. So now its one all dance station, 3 urban/rhythmic stations and 1 top 40. Its crazy cause they all seem to be competing for similar audiences.

Non-profit radio station 101.1 FM serves up commercial-free dance hits

Honolulu, Hawaii - Radio station KXRG-LP (low power) recently began broadcasting on 101.1 FM from near downtown Honolulu.  The station is calling itself “Energy 101, Hawaii’s Dance Station.”  Energy 101 is the first 100% dance radio station in Hawaii and the first low power station on Oahu.  Low Power FM, or LPFM, is a new class of licensed broadcast radio service.  The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) began issuing licenses for LPFM’s in 2003.  KXRG-LP received its license in January, 2006.

LPFM's transmit up to a maximum of 100 watts, are limited to an antenna height of 100 feet, must be commercial free, locally owned and operated, and non-profit.  KXRG’s current license permits broadcast of 12 hours per day between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. seven days a week.

”We identified a need in Honolulu for a full time dance station more than 8 years ago” said Jay Dietz, President of Ohana Broadcasters, the non-profit organization that operates the station.  “When the FCC announced the filing window for the new LPFM service back in 2000, we jumped at the chance to bring commercial free dance music to Hawaii.”

Energy 101 is one of only nine 100% dance format stations in the nation.  Other stations on the short list include C-89 in Seattle, KNGY in San Francisco and the world famous WKTU in New York.  “We’ve modeled our station more after the Seattle station which is the longest running dance station in the country since 1979.  It is also commercial free, listener supported, and very popular in the northwest.  There’s definitely a market for dance music in the islands and Low Power FM is the perfect way to fill this niche,” said Dietz.

The new station provides coverage of the Honolulu metro area.  As a low power station, it’s coverage area is limited.  “We’re strongest between Ala Moana and Pearlridge,” says Dietz.  The station’s target market is teens to young adults, ages 14 to 35.  Arbitron, the company that rates radio stations, ranks Honolulu as the 63rd largest listener market in the nation.

Dietz comments, “We’re getting great feedback from listeners from Ala Moana to Pearlridge and way up the Likelike and Pali highways.  Our signal comes in loud and clear all over the most congested parts of the city.  One listener told us that at last there’s finally a station that plays music that moves you even when the traffic isn’t!”
