I'm planning on moving to the Portland area in the next couple of months from the South. Can someone tell me how much housing generally is there and where the best areas are to live?

i know the pearl district is a really upcoming place to live, but prices can be high...

Buying a house is the way that I would like to go but coming from the South I'm not sure as to the prices there. Here we can get a nice home in a nice area for about 160K....I'm guessing that would be the ghetto there, so any information would be helpful...how expensive is the Downtown Area for living? I would like to live in a place with accessible public transportation and near park areas. please help portland!

Thanks for the two responses, I have decided to pass on Portland I have found more information in other city forums and have decided that those areas would be better for me at this time, again thanks for the two responses.
