Where was the traffic circle on Reidville Rd?

The Reidville Road traffic circle sat where Reidville Road and Blackstock Road intersect today.  The circle was built in the early 1960's when Reidville Road was rerouted away from the Westview community (check your maps for Old Reidville Road).

This circle was much larger in diameter than the Hearon Circle.  The Reidville Road circle was removed in the mid 80's but a small strip shopping center at the southeast quadrant of the intersection bears the name Reidville Circle Center.

Interesting. I always thought that the interstate caused the Reidville Rd realignment (and Blackstock too).

I'm sure the interstate had something to do with it.

The circle was pretty neat.  It was like a oval racetrack and was slightly banked.

My Mom's '68 Pontiac Le Mans used to roar around that thing on the way back from the family farm in Moore. We actually used to race back to our eastside home with me and my Mom in one car and my bro and Dad in another (had to use both cars to carry all the produce). I think they were only like 6 traffic lights from the RR traffic circle to our Hillcrest neighborhood.

Am I assuming the diagonal sidewalk between the center and the fountain was left from the circle?

I drove through that intersection this weekend, and I made a point to see how the circle fit in. You can clearly see where it used to be thanks to that shopping center (I had never noticed the name) and all of the excess space at the corners there.

ISpeaking of old stores... I notice the old Ingle's on Fernwood-Glendale Road at Clemson Street.  Did they also have a previous store in the former adjacent shopping center?  It also looks Bi-Lo had an old store at Clifton Glendale at Zion Hill roads.

I don't think it was a Bi-Lo, but I'm not sure. That one has been vacant for as long as I can remember.

The old Ingles on Fernwood-Glendale wouldn't be recognizable except for its 70s color scheme.

There was a BiLo at Clifton-Glendale.  It opened in the early 70's.

It was a Bi-Lo with a RevCo next to it.

The old Ingles on Fernwood/Glendale used to have a Foodtown sitting next to it in that shopping center where RL Jordan currently sits.  There used to also be an old game room in there as well as a bar whose name is escaping me right now.

I had completely forgotten that Food Lion used to be called Food Town.

I was annoyed yesterday when I went into Publix to find that they had rearranged the store.

Does anyone remember when you used to pass Floyd Mortuary on east main and there was nothing but pine trees all the way to Webber Rd on the right? Lan Yair was on the left and when you got out to Webber Rd there was a clothing store where Yannis is now called Robert Hall and across the street where the bowling alley is now was a lounge called the El Cid.

Does anyone remember the restaurant called the Lobster House that used to be downtown across from the old Evans Jr High on Kennedy St. That place used to rock!

How about some old bars that used to be here?

There was one under New China.  I went there a few times on dates to hear Walter Hyatt play.

And Boots Upstairs along there behind Aug Smith's downtown.

The Old Franklin Hotel used to have an underground bar. I think it was called Houligans or something like that. It had a hard wood bar that must have had 100 coats of sealer on it. Man it looked good. I think the old Hotel sat about where the bands play at music on main today.

I had heard about that one under the New China but never knew the name. That would have been cool to see Walter there. He grew up beside my cousins in Duncan Park.

Wasn't the one under the Franklin called Houlli's Underground and wasn't there a HUGE fishtank in the middle of it?

Houli's sounds right for under the Franklin. I don't remember the fish tank, but I only went there a couple of times in the mid to late 80's.

Didn't there used to be a nightclub directly across the street from the Herald Journal and beside where Carriage House Wines is now? I am not talking about the Loading Dock as that was where Sonny's Pizza is now. This place was in a building that has since been torn down.

The bar out on Fernwood Glendale beside the old Food Town was called the Tropicana Bar and served to about everyone no matter how bad your fake id was.

Another old bar used to sit out on Country Club Rd on the way to Glendale but burned down in the 80's. I can't remember its name.
