Former Newport resident Richard Hatch was sentenced to 51 months in prison today for failing to pay taxes on the $1,000,000 he won on the "Survivor" reality show.

Taxes on winnings like that may be outrageously high, but you pay the price for not paying them. Did he think he was above the law because of his minor celebrity status?

I think that it's ridiculous that we are going to spend tens of thousands of our taxpayer dollars to keep him in jail for not paying his taxes.

4 years seems outrageous to me. How long do rapists get? No wonder the US has the highest incarceration rate in the country.

decriminalize possession of most drugs, or even better, legalize them and tax them. most prisoners will be freed.
but i'm unsure of your statement "the US has the highest incarcertaion rate in the country". did you mean RI has the highest?

My bad, I meant US has the highest in the world. And yes, I totally agree that posession of most drugs (at least pot, shrooms and acid) should be legal.
do we really? it's probably because we don't automatically have death sentences for menial crimes (some countries execute you for possession).
