I mean really. In what bizarro universe is the opening of a parking lot considered news? And, in what city is that environmental nightmare allowed to exist without any green whatsoever?

Are you two mental? The only place within 10 feet of this lot is the Library. Everything else is more than 10 feet away. The Parking Crisis is most certainly not over. Unless you are suggesting that people walk somewhere!?

You know, I had never thought of it before, but do you know what would be TOTALLY sweet at the Library location? A Parking lot! It's centrally located, and it has convenient parking right next door so you could park either at the parking lot, or just park next door and walk to the parking lot. Maybe they could get a tram.

Are you daft? Surely you are not suggesting that one would park on one side of Empire Street when their destination is clear across Empire Street.
There is a lovely little installation of old pieces of the Public Safety complex on the corner of Green and Broadway. People will park in this new lot to view this exciting installation.

I think we need some creativity here people: Step 1 was the vision of 150 parking spaces beautifully delineated in crisp, white stripes against a black asphalt background in the heart of the Renaissance City. Step 2 will introduce a contextual component to this already groundbreaking project: The Public Safety Memorial Drive Thru™.
The Public Safety Memorial Drive Thru™ will allow the public to view the beauteous installation of architectural debris from the comfort and safety of their car! Dubbed the Dway, cars will weave around pieces of the Public Safety complex in about 30 seconds.
For the holidays, there will be a special red and green lighting scheme along the entire length of the Dway ( <---special Dway color scheme for the holidays).
It's a win-win that will revitalize this part of downtown through art, contextual design and parking.

PS: See how Green and Atwells each need to be shifted slightly to meet each other properly? Then they would create a continuous direct route from Federal Hill to the Jewelry District. You'd also end up with two interesting tear drop shaped lots that could have some really dynamic architectural statement on the corners.

Speaking of... I think the old Washington St entrance to the library should be reopened and emphasized. It's a beautiful piece of architecture.

why was it closed (other than maybe for ADA compliance)? that section of the building is one of the best pieces of architecture in the city if you ask me. i don't know who thought it'd be a good idea to ruin it with the expansions and not keep in line with the original building.

The expansions themselves are decent late deco buildings. I like them. But I agree with the idea of reopening that entrance, and that the original washington street side is nothing short of incredible.

i disagree. i think they're really poor interpretations of the style and really do no justice to the original building. they look just like big cement blocks with a little added so they could call it "art deco" without putting a whole lot of effort into it.

They aren't nearly as ugly as some of the other cement blocks that surround them. Grain of salt.

PS: While I agree 110% that this parking lot is bad-bad-bad...
...am I the only one that doesn't miss the Public Safety Complex that much? In some ways, I like the space even better without it and think E@B will improve that area 120%... Don't pile on too hard, now... Be kind...
