Local news reports today it will be two more years before Phase 3 is complete as of April 2011.

http://www.arkansaso...ic-ye-20110406/

"The work on the latest phase began in January, but heavier than expected  snowfall hampered work initially. For all the work that is going on  now, only about 2.5 per-cent of the project has actually been completed,  which means motorists who use the interchange should anticipate marked  changes over the next few months."

Here is a PDF I found showing the aesthetic designs that are going to be incorporated into the earth walls and flyovers:   http://arkansascarry...laesthetics.pdf

I saw that a couple days ago and forgot to say anything about it- thanks for sharing. Thanks for the PDF too, I hadn't seen that but it's nice to see what they have planned for the aesthetics of the new interchange. I'm a big fan- it's not that hard (or expensive) to do these little decorative touches to make the interchanges seem less harsh and ugly, and I remembered thinking when I was in Dallas a lot last year how much nicer a lot of their interchanges looked than ours due to the little touches like that. Maybe someday we'll see improvements to the 630/30 interchange and the downtown interchanges done in the style and line of thinking as the 430/630 project. But that will probably even be more difficult and expensive to do due to space constraints, so I'll probably never see that happen.

Personally, I think most of the "details" are tacky.  To add insult to injury, it's all rendered in a gross brown color. Seriously?  Is it 1972?

Overall I think the designs are rather interesting.  Although I do admit I'm not so sure about the colors.  That one design looks a lot like a design of E Fay Jones.  The overhead vaulting of the Mildred Cooper Chapel in Bella Vista in fact.  I wish Arkansas had been doing this a while back ago when a lot of other states had started it.  I would have loved to have some sort of aesthetic aspect to section of I-540 in NWA. But with the way the AHTD focuses so much into building roads in rural Arkansas I guess I'm lucky we have what we have.

Not sure if this was posted here yet...   This is an incredibly detailed PDF showing all the modifications to the interchange area.   Zoom in very closely and you can clearly see the traffic patterns, flyovers, lane additions, etc.

I'm all for this- if they can go ahead and get everything knocked out all at once instead of having to rebid and have a partially completed interchange that sits a bit before being completed and messes up traffic all over again- go for it!
