Hotel Online- Meier and Frank

"Developer Sage Hospitality Resources said this week that it intends to build a swank $117 million hotel on the upper 10 floors of the downtown landmark. Luxury Collection, a brand owned by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., intends to bring four- or five-star opulence to a building that had not aged particularly well in recent decades."

This was originally planned as a Renaisance Hotel.  I have to admit I'm glad it's now going to be a Luxury Collection Hotel.  Many are sad to see the MF go but it was dying a slow death and the new Macy's will be a nice addition to downtown.

Here's a pic...not mine...

I gather from the article that at least the lower floors are staying open as Macy's?

Here's more info...

The Nines

“The Nines, A Luxury Collection Hotel” (Starwood Hotels & Resorts) is an important part of the exciting revitalization of downtown Portland, Oregon.  The Nines will be situated within the top nine stories of the historic Meier & Frank building, with Macy’s department store occupying the lower five stories.  A street level entrance will provide elevators to shuttle guests up to the 8th floor atrium lobby.  The hotel will include 331 guestrooms, 14,000 square feet of meeting space, an atrium restaurant and a rooftop lounge.  The interior design of The Nines has been described as “nostalgic modern” and will pay homage to the legacy of fashion and elegance of the former Meier & Frank department store, a landmark since 1908.  The Nines is scheduled to open in the summer of 2008."

Thanks for the link inkdaub, what's going on with all the upscale hotels in downtown Portland all of a sudden? It was like a light bulb went off for everyone and its a rush to get them built the quickest.

I guess this answers my question above as Portland hotel rates rise above the $200 mark.

Well, Macy's is now closed and will remain so for the entire year.  I'm cool with it...get the customers out of the way and get to work on the renovation.

Inkdaub, are all of the renovations interior work? Or is there some exterior work planned as well?

There is some exterior work but mostly interior on the store portion.  The upper levels that will become the hotel will require quite a bit of work both inside and out.  They will try and keep as much of the building's facade as they can but they are still working on it.

The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places so that rules out any drastic changes.

The plan is have the store portion ready for shoppers by next Christmas' shopping season.  The hotel will take longer, though.

This should be a great addition to downtown Portland's hotel offerings.  I have no doubt that Starwood will manage the property with care and exactitude.  Have you found any renderings of the project?

I love Starwood and I'm glad Port is getting another property.  I have seen some renderings but nothing very good.  I do try to keep track, though.  This thing is about a fifteen minute walk from my place and literally around the corner from work...I pass it every single day.  If I see a decent rendering I'll post it.
