Moderator's Note: Since this is the coffeehouse forum, I'm going to pin this topic for now and retitle it "Atlanta in the Media". It might be useful to follow how our city is being portrayed by the media out there.

No one can complain anymore about Atlanta being ignored in the media. TBS is now airing a Tyler Perry Sitcom called House Of Payne set in Atlanta and An HBO series set in Buckhead and a Fox drama series called Vanished also set in Atlanta area will debut in the new TV season. What is your opinion of this exposure, will it continue as Atlanta grows and will it change the views of our city?

From an outsiders POV, I think ATL gets a lot of exposure now. On The Weather Channel they can't give a forecast for Nevada without mentioning the current temp in ATL.  ;)

I always think Charlotte gets ignored...or they add the "NC" behind its name which is almost as bad! I guess we all want more recognition for the places we like and choose to call home. It sounds like ATL will be getting even more attention from all those shows.

Sounds cool to me!

It's about time!  And I mean for the Southeast in general.  There just isn't enough comming out on tv of our region and we are the most populated single region in the country.  I just hope that they are filmed here as well.

A Tyler Perry sitcom!?

Sounds interesting. I love his other works. I'll have to watch it.

Speaking of Tyler Perry - he is filming his next movie in downtown right now.

I say it's still not enough, Newnan.  Atlanta needs to strike while the iron is hot and consolidate its position.  Whatever happened to the rap movie ATL, for instance?

It already came out in theaters...sometime in the spring.

Well, the executive chef from Seeger's was on Today Show this morning. And Richard Blais will be on Iron Chef America this fall.

Everyone, Vanished comes on Fox tonight at 9pm. There was a very interesting article about the series in the AJC today. From what the article says, the exposure will definitely be beneficial.

Quote

Viewers tonight will be struck by how much "Vanished's" thoroughly modern depiction of Georgia deviates from the hackneyed moonlight and magnolias view so beloved by movies and TV. Instead of the Okefenokee Swamp or the hollers of North Georgia, a high-speed nighttime chase takes us past Philips Arena and the gleaming Atlanta skyline. Rather than some antebellum, veranda-wrapped Tara twin, Sen. Collins lives in a Buckhead McMansion tripped out with touchpad security systems and flat-screen TVs.

"Atlanta's a very cosmopolitan city now, and they chose to show that aspect of it," said Nelson, who lived in Georgia for nine years as a child and who's gone from playing a dastardly presidential chief of staff on "24" to what seems like "Vanished's" nice-guy senator.

Fox series 'Vanished' offers city as mix of modern, mysterious

Hey, I saw it, Celeste.  It made Atlanta look very cool, with many shots of our highrise skyline, gritty street scenes, and aerials of Buckhead mansions.

^ I missed it last night, but I'm going to watch it next Monday.    Glad to see the producers of the show doing a good job of displaying Atlanta as it really is.    I remember an old terrible movie with one of the Baldwin brothers and that Morpheus guy off of Matrix that was set in Atlanta and everyone in the move tried to sound like they were from south Georgia, although they did have some cool shots of the city and Stone Mountain.     This may sound funny, but I always thought that Matlock did a pretty good job of showcasing the city.

There's no excuse for missing it. :)

Thanks for the link.  I now have a "season pass" for it on TiVo.  A mix of politics and Atlanta...two of my favorite things!  :)

Okay, so my girlfriend is pulling a 12 hour shift at the hospital and so I finally watched it tonight; they apparently did some sort of encore special for it showcasing the first two episodes.   Well, the acting really sucks (but what t.v. drama doesn't?) and apparently Atlanta is home to only white Yankees.  Having said all that though, I will watch it this Monday because it held my attention and I'm trying to support the home team here.   It actually might turn out to be a cool show.   I love how they pronounced Chamblee.  Frpm now on, that's how I'm saying it.

They sure make it seem that way don't they? I thought i would've heard at least one distinctive, high society Georgia accent.

ABC Nightly News (I think ABC!!!) was broadcasting from Atlanta last night.  I thought the city look especially good.  A lot of interviews on the street, and of course the Delta takeover was a big topic.

Not that it necessarily puts Atlanta in the spotlight but there seems to be a string of movies filming here recently including " We Are Marshall", the horror movie (title?), Tyler Perry's movie and Revenge of the Nerds (before Emory stopped them from filming on campus).  And I've seen film crew signs that suggest something else is filming in the area.  Anyone have any idea what it may be?
