OK - I'll bite! My hubby and I are considering moving to Oregon now that the kids are on their own. (Note-we are not yuppies bound for a condo in Portland). We both live in Minneapolis, have lived in big cities most of our lives, but are looking forward to getting away from the urban blight. Are there any suggestions for us? We both like greenery, small town within a couple hours of a big city, proximity to college/university for the intellect factor, a little bit of land (5-15 acres). We are pretty self-sufficient as far as buying a small fixer-upper. He has suggested the east-facing side of the coastal range. Ideas?

Look at Bend or Ashland.

I'd recommend looking at Corvallis, OR, which is a great college town about 80 miles south of Portland. It has a vibrant downtown and a great park system, with both the mountains and coast within a short drive.

One thing that I love about other forums at UP is the city's photo of the day. I think having a Portland Photo of the day would be a great addition. I do think I have some photos I could dig up. Any thoughts?

Portland is not a 'postcard' type of place really.  It is VERY photogenic from street level, though.

I guess the Portland area itself isn't but the state as a whole certainly is very photogenic.

You think so?  I LOVE Portland specifically because i think it's so beautiful, especially when Mt. Hood is visible.  I'll try to dig up some of my old pics.

I think depending on the shot, I mean, the view with Mt. Hood and DT seems like the classic postcard photo. But other then DT are there any other postcard opportunities?

Well I live here but I spend most of my time in the other sections.

Me too.  I'm from Michigan, so I'm checking out all the stuff going on in Detroit.  Oregon just seems to be an allright state with not much to worry about.  Detroit on the other hand has a big negative image and it's interesting to see the new buildings comming out of the old city.  I think that Oregonians spend less time online and more time outside doing fun activities.  I wouldn't worry about the lack of activity on urban planet.  I would concentrate on all the great things that exist in Portland and the rest of Oregon, especially the Gorge!
