Here is a link to aerial photography of some of the recent construction.  It can be helpful to anyone interested in seeing the schools for the first time.

This site has reports you can download for each school.  Seems to be a good place to start.

I would give the Dept. of Education website a look over as well. It ahs lots of information about schools, and you can access all of the report cards and stuff there.

Can anyone recommend any good apartment complexes?  My lease runs out in May, and I really want to get out of the one I'm in.  Too many kids running wild here, and I already have big scratches on my 2007 car.

I moved here from cross country and didn't get to see the apartment first - it was NOT as advertised.  I'll never make that mistake again.  The apartment is so run down, and I have to have constant repairs done.  We were also told the building was only 15 years old.  Yeah, maybe in 1960.  ;)

There was a big hit and run in the parking lot soon after I moved in which damaged a truck we were driving, and the cop told us the area had been opened up to section 8 housing, that there was a lot of crime, etc. too - ugh!  "Luxury apartments", my arse.  >.>

Well, for starters, which complex is this "luxury complex"? I had lots of trouble with Oak Ridge at Pelham, being "luxury" but having tenants with meth addictions, and the accompanying crime that ensued only cemented the reasons to break my lease. The thing that I've learned is that for a good complex, you have to go somewhere where the kids and irresponsible type can't afford to live. Again, that's if you want a complex. Check out Craigslist for Greenville, along with Greenville News classifieds for apartments for rent by private landlords. I was living over at McDaniel Heights before I moved, and I had a nice quiet one bedroom apartment near downtown, for $425 a month, and it was a very quiet neighborhood, and the building was built in 1935, but still very nice and kept up.

I thought that's what I was getting, since my rent is $925 a month...  but that's for a three bedroom.  I think I'm going for two bedrooms wherever I go next.  I really don't need the extra room.  :P

I currently live at the "Plantations at Haywood".  Really not what I expected.  They could be nice if they actually kept up with the upkeep over the years, but just, wow.  Everything looks so old inside and out - at least in the apartment I'm in.  Since I've lived here I've had outlets not work, the A/C comes and goes, the heat won't cut off sometimes when you switch it to "off", the hot water heater busted and got water everywhere, and I keep finding bobby pins in front of my door - wtf??

The apartments I lived in in CA were over 60 years old, and they looked awesome!! They were $1600 a month for one bedroom... ouch.  That's exactly why we moved back here to SC, we want a decent house with a *real* yard someday soon.  :)

Thank you for the link - I will definately check it out.  I'm currently considering the Estates at Bellwood since they seem to have a good rating at apartmentratings.com.

Hey, Nutkitty, I'm from CA, moving to Greenville in a few months.  Any advice on moving across country?  I'm planning on just loading up my car with what it will hold and then buying things when I get there.  I don't have all that much stuff:  A mattress and box spring, a washer and dryer, some small antique pieces, but other than that. just some electronics that will fit in my car, and I found out I can ship some things via Amtrak, small boxes of unbreakables.  So I figured it would cost more to move those few pieces of furniture than it would to buy new ones.

But as far as planning and timing and everything, it's kind of stressing me out.   I guess you have to line something up before you leave as far as your living situation, but I don't want to end up in a bad place like you.  I'm from Orange County, next to Los Angeles, and I have not had good luck with things I've tried to do on craigslist, whether it be finding a roommate or hiring a mover, etc.  If I could get some personal recommendations, it would be much better.

Nutkitty, if you're living there already, aren't you able to find another place since you're already there and can drive around and check things out?  Or maybe I didn't read your post clearly and misunderstood.

And jarvisj3, what about this McDaniel Heights?  Is that an area of the city or the name of a compelx?

If anyone has advice about any of this, it would be most appreciated!
Cheryl

McDaniel Heights is actually condominiums, at 601 Cleveland St, in Greenville. The company that manages the property is the Real Estate Centre, on Augusta St. It's in the historic area, about a block from McDaniel @ Cleveland, and the best part, is that being so close to downtown, it's a minute driving to the new McBee Station with Publix, and you can walk to Cleveland Park. I know that several members of the forum know where this is, and can attest to this being a very nice part of Greenville. I know that several units have been placed on the market for sale, links to realtors deleted

As for Plantations at Haywood, I know the city police officer that lives there, and likewise, that tends to be common place for the strippers and others to get into, being that it is very close to the clubs and bars. I know that the Carlyle is nearby, and that is a VERY high end complex, being gated and CCTV monitored as well. I'm not too familiar with the apartments in Mauldin and Simpsonville, but the best bet for a complex would in Greenville, again if you can afford it,  would be either the Carlyle, or the new apartments downtown, either at the McBee Station, or Riverplace.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

To answer your question, Cheryl - that is why I'm asking for suggestions, so I'll have an idea where to look without wasting my time at other apartment complexes.  My boyfriend is from Easley/Greenville and doesn't even know of the "good" apartments, so it is word of mouth, really.

When I moved to the Plantations, I had NO IDEA that there was a strip club right around the corner.  It doesn't *seem* to be in a bad area, but gah...  I just can't stand hearing about all of the break ins, and reading about the peeping toms they had problems with not too long ago.

When I moved here from CA, I used a moving company to get my stuff out - ABF, or something?  It ended up being twice as expensive than expected, unfortunately.  We had hired some packers, and they really did a great job which actually saved us some money on the ABF truck - but they were $600 themselves.  Crazy..  (but we saved more than $600 from having them pack things the way they did in the truck.)  We moved during the middle of a workday, so couldn't reply on having friends help out.  Oh well.

I had to have my car shipped too, which was it's own set of troubles.  We used a company recommended by ABF  (forgot the name, but it is the only one recommended by ABF, I believe), and gah...  I paid $900 to have them take THREE WEEKS longer than they said it would take - and then had it sit in Atlanta for a week before they could tell me that they had "no idea" when it could leave that area to get to me?  I was paying for a car rental that entire time, so that was pretty ridiculous.  My boyfriend ended up going to Atlanta to pick up the car - and then they wanted to charge us extra for him doing that??

Ironically, my car completely broke down three days later, and I had to get a new one.  Figures.  :P

If I find any apartments I like, I'll write about it here.  I'm going to check out the Estates at Bellwood in two weeks - I like that they have two bedroom units with screened in porches available.  Screened in porches is a huge reason I went with the Plantations.

If I had more time, I'd look for a house...  maybe I could rent one for a while.  :P

I want to remind everyone that this thread is intended to provide general locational advice, and other new resident questions. Please do not link to realtor websites or discuss the pricing of specific units/houses etc. This action is a violation UP's rules. If you have any questions feel free to contact me or any of the staff members and we will be glad to clarify.

General discussion of pricing, streets, condo/apt complexes/towers, and neighborhoods is acceptable.

Relocating family from Reno to Greenville this summer.  Will be in town end of next week for 5 days to make plans for our move/house hunting.  Wondering if anyone has suggestions of must see areas or areas to avoid.  Seen Travelers Rest mentioned several times...

^^^Must see areas: downtown, Travelers Rest, northern part of Greenville where Ceasars Head state park is, and everywhere else. The only area I can think of too avoid is the far western part of Greenville County west of St. Francis Hospital. What is your price range, renofergie?

I agree with what others have mentioned, and I also think you should consider the Eastside (Greer, Mauldin, Simpsonville areas).  A lot of growth and development is occurring there.  It is definitely suburbia, but most of it is very nice suburbia with tons of shopping, dining, and attractions nearby.  Please let us know if we can advise you further.  I look forward to hearing about your trip when you return home.

^^^Also, the Powdersville area, which is almost on the border of Anderson and Greenville Counties in Anderson County is currently experiencing a growth spurt. It's only 10 minutes away from downtown Greenville also.

Taylors never gets any love here (unless people are calling that Eastside.  Taylors has easy access to most parts of town (including Greer, and downtown Greenville) and housing on this side of town is hceaper than some other areas.  Homes in the Pebble Creek/Pebble Valley area are typically from the 80s - but are nice homes.  I like Taylors quite a bit.

Taylors is kind of hard to peg down.  Yes, their is a Taylors "proper" around the old mill village, Taylor's First Baptist, etc. but then their is the "other Taylors which seems to be large postal area between Greer, Paris Mountain, Greenville, Travelers Rest and Simpsonville.
