with developers, who are so encouraged by early discussions they are adding new street-level space to their projects.
Conor McNally, Novare's developer for Viewpoint, said his negotiations for space in Midtown are generating widespread interest.
The developers are negotiating with some really exciting brand names, national and international retailers, some of whom are not even in Atlanta right now," she said.
VISION AND REALITY
- Midtown Mile: A plan to make the corridor on Peachtree Street from the Woodruff Arts Center to the Fox Theatre into an upscale shopping and restaurant district, a la Chicago's "Magnificent Mile" on Michigan Avenue.
- Right now: 230,000 square feet of shopping, services and restaurants already exist.
- By 2010: Another 370,000 square feet.
- Goal: 1 million square feet by 2012.
- Officials say housing unit growth within Midtown Mile walking distance will attract retail.
- 2010 projection: 13,316
- 2005 estimate: 11,511
- 2000 census: 9,384
- 1990 census: 6,514

The 2010 projection seems low to me, assuming the 2005 # was accurate.
The Spire, Plaza Midtown and 905 Juniper are all new since 2005. Then add Aqua, ViewPoint I and 1010 Midtown and I think those projects alone comprise more than 1800 new housing units.

due to high interest from retailers, Novare is adding 20,000 sf of retail (the portion along 6th street) to phase one of Viewpoint.

Do you know what will happen to Loca Luna?
I am well aware of the fact that I am not Martinman, but I feel I can answer this. I know the owner of LocaLuna and last time I spoke with him he was searching for wharehouse space in the Howell Mill area. Suffice it to say that whatever course he decides to take, the LocaLuna that we all know and love will be torn down in app. 15 months or so...maybe sooner.

Luckie Food Lounge is located in Downtown Atlanta near the Georgia Aquarium and features seven miles of LED lighting, 2,200 gallons of salt water in three aquariums including a 28-foot aquarium behind the sushi bar, 80 speakers throughout and all-day dining from 11 a.m. – 2 a.m., seven days a week. Adjacent to the lounge is Charm, a sundry store that sells box lunches, gelato and more.
Also....
-Starbucks and a Carvel/Cinnabon will open at Centennial Park West condos, across the street from the aquarium.
-the Museum of Patriotism will relocate to the retail space in the Post Allen Plaza development which plans to break ground this fall and there is talk of another Museum taking space at the Hilton Garden Inn/Park Pavilion.
And heres a pic taken from the new and Six Feet Under on the westside (by Joe F Steed)

I live in The Dakota, which is across the street, and we received an letter from LL 6 months back (or so) saying they'd be closing in January '08. We haven't received a specific notice of where they're moving to but I recently heard that they were moving into the Amsterdam Walk shopping center off of Monroe.
The Howell Mill area makes sense to me too. There's still plenty of less expensive land and industrial type areas where they could get away with making some noise at night. I love the new Six Feet Under on 11the Street. (Although, since there's no cemetery and it's on top of a hill, maybe they should've called it Six Feet Above)

By 2010, Midtown will add more than 3 million square feet of office space, 4,000 residential units and more than 700,000 square feet of retail in new developments, according to the Midtown Alliance.
Within the next three years, developers say they'll have 1 million square feet of retail, the equivalent of a major mall. "That figure is important because it's hard to get the attention of the more significant national retailers," Gouffon said. "Some of the retailers we're talking to only do five or six deals a year, so they're looking for something really big."

They did in fact consider locating at Viewpoint but decided to go with the "neighborhood feel" at Poncey-Highland (which I interpret to mean the rent was much cheaper).

That's a great fit for the area and I'm happy for that shopping center b/c it's one of my favorites.
Not good news for the Midtown Mile, however. I think they were counting on Urban Outfitters.

Counting on them???
The only way they would have been counting on them is if they signed a lease. It would have been a good fit but its not the type of store that would "make" a shopping district.
Novare's biggest problem may be that The Shopping Center Group is the one doing the retail leasing. Someone with more experience dealing specifically with this kind of retail might have been more successful. (Btw I have no idea how successful they have or haven't been in signing tenants.)
12th & Midtown on the other hand, says they are closing to signing their first leases.

I'm still interested to see what type of retailers do end up on the Mile.

-As reported in the Business Chronicle, Ludacris is partnering with chef Chris Yeo of San Francisco to open a restaurant in the former Spice location. Straits
-I've recently heard rumors that Zara is planning a second Atlanta store somewhere in Midtown.
Also, I found a pic of the new Urban Outfitters location
