Is there really a need for the coast guard to have live ammo zones?

I can just see it now:

Watch, as the magnificent moose feeds near the shore of beautiful Lake Superior at Isle Royale national park.  Watch as the wolf comes up behind, stalking its prey.  For thousands of years, wolves and moose have co-existed on Isle Royale, creating a web of *POP papapapapapappapapappapaap.. bang!*

Yes... defending our shoreline... from who?  Sharks?  Cuban refugees floating on a raft?

Here's an update, apparently the Coast Guard is still pursuing this. It just seems ridiculous, as I don't see any reason whatsoever to have the Coast Guard in the Great Lakes be armed.

Looks like the public commentary proved victorious here as the Coast Guard withdrew their plan to have live ammo testing. Good news.
