PROJO: "Giant anteater to debut at zoo Saturday"
"PROVIDENCE -- The Roger Williams Park Zoo offered a preview glimpse this morning of its new giant anteater exhibit, which opens to the public on Saturday.
The giant anteater is the world’s largest species of anteater. It measures up to 7 feet long from snout to tail and weighs up to 80 pounds. Plus, with its 2-foot-long tongue, it devours up to 35,000 insects a day.
The exhibit is part of the zoo’s $35-million “New Zoo” master plan and capital campaign. It’s the third new exhibit to open this summer. African wild dogs opened in May, and the new bald eagle habitat opened last month.
Check out the zoo’s plans for revitalization.
Admission is $12, $8 for seniors and $6 for children, 3 to 12. The zoo, located at 1000 Elmwood Ave., is open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (401) 785-3510 or visit www.rogerwilliamsparkzoo.org."

Took the kiddos to the zoo this morning - hadn't been in a couple months. They've been working hard on the upgrades this summer. We saw the anteater. "Giant" anteater is a very descriptive name -it's huge.
I have to say, the area around the anteater exhibit, which until recently has been the no-man's land by the tropical stinky monkey/bat house, looks great. They've done a lot of landscaping. There is a big faux-termite mound with a window onto the exhibit which the kids liked quite a bit.
I am quite happy to see all the changes to the zoo. The wetlands walk has been completely redone and it looks quite nice (though I preferred the old boardwalk to the gravel and Trex-like boards they have now). There are more signs and descriptions than there were previously. The eagles have a new and much larger and easier to view habitat where the polar bears used to be (along with a reconfigured walkway through the area). We've had a membership for several years, and it can get a little lame after a while, but with the new babies (we also saw the second baby giraffe today), and the upgrades and new exhibits, it's actually interesting to go again.
I am looking forward to the next few years and all the changes. There is a big sign saying the tree house will debut in 2011(!!). My kids are still pretty little, so I imagine I've got several more years of frequent zoo visits.

I think we're going to renew our membership in 2008. We skipped this year because my kids were getting a bit bored with it too. Glad to hear the trip report - thanks chemgeek.
