since no one has said anything yet, i might as well make a post here as i have some ads i wanna complain about.

first, the new pro-casino ad... i like how all these people are saying they'd be helped by the casino, such as the owner of mediterraneo.  does he really think people will leave the casino to drive to providence to go out to dinner when the casino will surely have pleny of good dining choices?  come on now...

second, the whitehouse ad that almost literally says "you're either with us or against us" to democrats who are considering voting for chafee (me being one of them because he votes based on what his constituents want rather than along party lines).  i don't care if there's one extra republican in the senate as long as it's chafee... after all, he's basically voted against all bush's policies, the war being the biggie (and the polarizer in CT with lieberman and lamont).

there have been some big votes that chafee has sided on the bush administration, the ones that sticks out are his continued support of incredibly conservative judges.  many people are having this crisis of faith regarding chafee and it is too bad, but when you lose the support of all the groups that formerly supported him because of his liberal leanings, but no won't simply because he calls himself a republican,  it tells you something. Well, it tells me something, anyway.

and that pro-casino ad cracks me up, considering how Mediterraneo got their $ to open up to begin with!

coming from CT i do know that the casino has both its benefits and its downsides. new clinics and hospitals (because believe me, the two hospitals down there are NO GOOD) built with casino money, upgrade of roads, the increase in tourist dollars (not everyone wants to see a 19th century sea-village) and the sheer availablity of jobs (especially as EB and General Dynamics has been steadily laying folks off for the last 15 or so years) has been helpful to the area. But the downside of course is the traffic and the degredation of fragile incomes, the increase (although i don't know the numbers) in crime, etc.

But we can't not support a casino on the fear of social ills increasing, frankly, not if the state already subsidizes gambling in the form of Newport Grand and Lincoln Park. That's simply not a good position for the state to be in. The state doesn't need to be "saved" from casino gambling, it needs to be "saved" from the tribes lawyers, the harrahs people and the west warwick contingent...

My objection continues to be that you don't f*&k with the state consitition on a whim.

Regarding the pro-casino ads, if I hear "but it's not just that" one more time on the radio I am going to going nucking futs.

If Chafee were not a Republican I would vote for him, and no, he would not need be a Democrat, he can be whatever party he wants, just not Republican. Aside from giving the majority to Bush, what annoys me about him being a Republican is, he's not a Republican. He lists the things he supports, and the issues that are important to him (as he did in his victory speech) and they all run counter to his party's platform. It makes him out to be an idiot, and I don't want an idiot representing me. I wish Jim Jeffords had been able to talk some sense into him.

The vote regarding John Bolton comes to mind as well.  I'm no political wonk, but if I recall, Chafee's vote was the one that Bolton's whole appointment was hinging on and he waited until the 11th hour, after much "soul searching," to let him go through...

Bolton is rapidly ascending to the third spot in the "America's Biggest International Political Embarrassment" contest behind the President and Vice President...

Me too!  Totally unsolicited!  I tried to unsubscribe, but it did not work.

He is an Independent candidate for Mayor of Providence.

the "link" in the email is not a link at all, it just says "click here to unsubscribe".  i replied and they removed me. i also informed them i never signed up for that email and that i am pretty sure it's illegal to not have a working unsubscribe link according to the anti-spam laws.

Yes, I was super annoyed that the unsubscribed link was broked. I added to my spam list. Knowing that all of us got it... I may need to look into some things here. Though you can't actually harvest emails here, if you send someone an email through here, it comes from UP, the sender does not get your email until/unless you respond with it.

It was sent to my UP address... hmmm.

I don't think the addresses could have been harvested here, but I put a thread in the Mod section so we can discuss/look into it.

it wasn't sent to the address i'm registered with at UP, it was sent to my other one (which is the one i use for GC:PVD).

i wonder where they harvested the addy's from... that's really annoying and i know that that tactic, even if i was considering voting for him, would have immediately cost him my vote.

Anything is hackable, but the fact that runawayjim received the email at a non-UP address and my address is all over the place makes me confident that they were not taken from here.

i got Harrop spam on my personal email account, no the one i use here, but i didn't get the casino stuff. I do wonder where they get the email from...I wonder if some neighborhood group or providence entity sold their mailing list, as my personal email is not up on any website, or used to subscribe to anything except neighborhood stuff...

I'm wondering about this too.  I got the spam message on an obscure work address that I've never released to anyone except places I've interviewed for jobs, so I've got to wonder how on Earth they figured that one out.
