This year's tournament was a great success.  But I think a lot of the credit goes to Wyndham organizers and their efforts to make this a regional event.  When this stop on the tour was still the Chrysler Classic, it was undeniably a Greensboro event.

But now, the Wyndham is a Triad event, with the lions share of ticket sales coming from residents outside of Greensboro and major sponsorships coming from Winston, including BB&T and Flow.

I hope tourney officials get their contract extension with Wyndham and a better date.  And I hope they continue to make this a regional event.  Because the last two years have proven that as a regional event, the Wyndham is one of the best stops on the entire PGA tour.

indeed. It was even advertised on TV as a Triad event showing the golf ball roll down the streets of Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem. The name Piedmont Triad was mentioned several times on national TV during the tournament as well. Wyndham is a better sponsor that Chrysler and I too hope they renew the contract and land a better date. I did hear Rumblings in the media a while back about the Grandover Resort becoming the Wyndham Resort. If Wyndham sees Greensboro and the Triad as a long time investment, I wouldn't be surprise to see that happen one day.

I am not sure we will ever see Tiger.  He doesn't play that many events a year.  He basically plays in the majors, the FedEx playoffs and a few others like the tourney in Hilton Head.  The problem with the PGA is that the tournaments pay out so much money that the big name golfers simply do not need to play that many events in a season.  Until the PGA steps in and provides real incentives for golfers to play all of the tournaments you will have guys playing basically when they feel like it.  The dates have hurt Greensboro, no doubt, but really there are a lot of bad dates when you take out every week before and after a major or annual big stop such as Hilton Head.

A new date could help but in my opinion the only thing that would really help would be for the PGA to require the pros to play every tournament every so many years.  Obviously the pros wouldn't like that so that is not likely to happen.  My guess is most likely the Wyndham may get put on a rotating schedule with other tourneys.  Problem is they will likely rotate it with other tourneys which are also unhappy with their date so that may end up being moot.  It is less of a date issue and more of a PGA culture issue.

Anyway, the best golf tournament of the week was played this past weekend here.  It was a great tournament with lots of famous golfers present whether the casual fan recognized all of them or not.

Well the Wyndham kicked off today. There was some speculation that Tiger Woods would play here this year because of his low rankings. Bottom line,If they want Tiger to play in Greensboro, They need a better date. It seems as if every time they move the date, the The Wyndham Championship is always right before or after a major tournament. Consequently the top players rest during the Wyndham.

Tiger Woods finally playing the Wyndham in Greensboro? There could be a big chance this year since Tiger dropped outside the top 125 in FedEx Cup standings. Only the top 125 players are eligible to compete in the four FedEx Cup events that follow the PGA Tour’s regular season and the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro is the last tournament in the regular season. If Tiger wants to play those FedEx championship tournaments, he likely would have to play the Wyndham if he has any chance at all. Tiger has always skipped the PGA event in Greensboro because it was always right before a major tournament or right after one. Tiger would use that time to rest before and after the big events. Greensboro always got the short end of the stick when it came to tournament dates. But this time Tiger would have to play in Greensboro if he wants to play in the big tournaments in August.

^If Tiger doesn't play in the Bridgestone and PGA Championship (which he likely won't given he hasn't swung a club in months or worked with his new swing coach) then you can bank on him not playing the rest of the year. Most of the PGA players are not huge fans of the FedEx cup playoffs, especially those like Tiger and Phil, so he's probably not going to make an effort to make the cut for the FedEx. More than anything he just needs to take the rest of the year off to get better physically and mentally.

EDIT: Ok, so I was wrong. Woods just committed to playing at Bridgestone. Still think it's a long shot for him to play beyond the PGA Championship unless he's playing off the hook.

the local News & Record blog think there is a chance he could show up in Greensboro. If he is serious about playing the FedEx cup playoffs, he'll have to play in Greensboro to make up points if he has any hope of making the playoffs. But we'll know soon if he plans to try to make the playoffs or skip them this year. He has missed a number of tournaments this year. The Wyndham's poor tour date has given the Wyndham the reputation of being a tournament of bottom feeders. But this year there will be a few big names. Even Still you would think more big players would play the Wyndham. Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro (also where the Atlantic Coast Conference was founded in 1953) is the only Donald Ross designed course left on the PGA Tour. Sam Snead was one of the world's greatest golfers and played in Greensboro between 1938 and 1965, so there is a prestigious history here. The Greensboro PGA event is one of the oldest on the tour which started in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open.

BTW Vijay Singh has committed to the Wyndham Championship this year.

Tiger Woods Meets with Wyndham Championship Director

There could be a chance that Tiger Woods could play in Greensboro for the first time in his career. The reason there is a chance is because Tiger has missed a number of tournaments this year and if he plays bad at the Bridgestone invitational or PGA Championship he will have to play at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro to make up FedEx point to get into the FedEx Cup playoffs starting with the Barclays. Note that Tiger really hasn't been playing that great all season. If Tiger Woods plays in Greensboro, he will be in the company of a few other heavy hitters including Vijay Singh. But what this means is that golf fans in central NC will be hoping that Tiger Woods play awful at the PGA Championship or Bridgestone. How he plays in those two events will determine whether or not he plays in Greensboro.

Tigers decision to skip the Wyndham leaves golf fans scratching their heads. Tiger said he is skipping for "family obligations", but he intends to play in the playoffs. There is just one problem. Tiger didn't play that well in the Word Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational in Akron last week. If he plays the same golf at the PGA Championship that he played in Akron, particularly the poor driving accuracy, he will never make the cut for the Playoffs without playing in Greensboro. Yet he intends to play in the playoffs. I don't know what he is thinking and he even contradicts himself saying he wish there was another tournament besides the PGA Championship. There is another tournament and its the Wyndham Championship. Professional golfers playing at the Wyndham will pass him in FedEx points claiming the 125th spot.

I won't say I told you so :) As I eluded to before, golfers don't really value the playoffs the same way other sports do. First and foremost they are focused on winning majors (Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship) and a few other tournaments in between. So it's no surprise that Tiger won't play at Greensboro for a spot in the FedEx playoffs. Though it would've been a nice boon for the Wyndham tournament. Love him or hate him Tiger still out draws any golfer on tour right now, even if he hasn't won in almost two years. After watching him over the weekend, he has plenty of work to do.

well there is enough incentive to play the playoffs and there are $10 million reasons. Thats what the winner gets. I could understand if Tiger had no interest in playing the play offs this year but at the press conference he expressed great interest and referred to himself being in the playoffs. The problem is that he has to get there first and skipping the Wyndham is the worst thing he could do with his game play being so poor. He needs the points to advanced to the 125th spot. If he does poorly at the PGA Championship this week and just falls short, he may be kicking himself for not playing in Greensboro.

^I'm pretty sure he'd love the $10 million (wouldn't we all?). But he's not worried about money. He has more than 99.9% of people will ever see in their lifetime. The playoffs aren't where his focus is at right now, unless he somehow pulls off a win at the PGA Championship this week. If he were to get in to the FedEx, great. But I don't think he's going to pull out all the stops to try and make it. He'd come out and say it if that were the case. I know he plans to play over in Asia and probably Australia in the fall. Some of the tournaments there actually pay him a few million for just showing up at the tournament.

Woods decision to skip the Wyndham is costing him. He has played his worst round ever at the PGA Championship and now he needs a huge turn around if he is to make the cut for the FedEx playoff.

BTW Woods has until tomorrow to change his mind about playing in Greensboro. After today it looks like he has to play the Wyndham if he is serious about making the playoffs.

This year The Wyndham Championship has the strongest field in over a decade with a number of PGA's top golfers. Along with Vijay Singh and others,  Jim Furyk, the 2010 FedExCup champion is committing to the Wyndham Championship. If Tiger changes his mind today and comes to Greensboro, it will be the strongest field Greensboro's PGA event has seen in a very long time. Every year the Wyndham is aired on national tv on CBS and the golf channel but if Tiger changes his mind and comes, Greensboro would be the focus of attention this year in the golf world because everyone would be watching to see if Tiger makes the cut for the FedEx playoffs. If Tiger doesn't change his mind about coming to Greensboro, his season will likely end today at the PGA Championship.
