I've heard that the Master Plan and Urban Code is going to council for a vote on Feb 14th.

The Downtown Master Plan and Urban Code were passed on Monday!!! The second reading will take place on Feb 28, with the code going into effect on July 1, 2011.

This moment has been 4 years in the making. This is truly a great day for Spartanburg. We will now be the largest city in the state with a form-based code. I hope that after everyone sees how well this works in downtown, that the rest of the City's zoning ordinance should follow suit. And who knows, maybe the county will get on board someday too.

The Urban Code and Downtown Master Plan was approved last night. On July 1, 2011 Spartanburg will have the most progressive zoning ordinance in the state for its downtown.

As I was driving into town on Church Street coming from the hospital, I noticed what looked like one of the new 'wayfinding" signs.  it was red and black and had arrows to the auditorium, wofford plus some other places.  Has anyone else seen any of these?

I haven't noticed those, but I did see a new Welcome to Spartanburg - Hub City sign on 29 near Westgate. It looked very nice, a lot like Greenville's entry signs.

I think the wayfaring signs look great.

I agree.  I really like the look of the gateway and wayfinding signs.  I can't wait to see more wayfinding signage installed in the future!

Very cool. I like the design. Much more distinctive than I thought they would be.

I passed through town a little over a week ago and checked out these signs.  I have to admit that I didn't really care for them.  As soon as I saw these the first thing that came to mind was the mess of "funky" (and I use that term loosely here) signs you will see when navigating through Disney and Universal.  Definitely got an amusement park vibe from these.  That look definitely fits in those tourist traps, but not in a downtown like Spartanburg.  I think it is great that the city is finally putting these up, but there is a mismatch of styles here.  They could have went with a more distinguished look and still kept it fun and vibrant.

I tend to agree. I'm also not really a fan of the color scheme.

I see what you guys are saying, but there is a reason that Disney/Universal uses these types of design...  they work.  You know that the parks have done a ton of research of this type of this thing so a little bit of imitaion in this case isn't that bad.  

One thing...I've usually identified Spartanburg with green/knaki colors, but then they put out the red/black signs.  Doesn't seem to be any connection to the city.

They certainly are not generic. That's all that matters. They are so weird that people will look at them.
