norwich is having a really hard time making a comeback because of mohegan. people don't say "let's go to norwich", they say "let's go to the casino". the bars there have become the norwich bars. i had friends who lived in norwich and rather than hang out downtown, they hung out in the casino. they did not gamble, instead, they went to an irish pub there that charged $5 a pint for everything they had on tap or $6 for a 20 oz glass.
downtown norwich is practically a ghost town with a few bars doing well. with the casino about a 3 mile drive from downtown, why would anyone need downtown with the low class bars? you can go to the casino and have everything you need.

I am jelaous of Southeastern CT, I've stayed at the House of Blues Hotel in Chicago, it was amazing. That would be so perfect for Front St. Can the Mohegans take over that project as well?

I'd be all for that. I wish some of that boldness and vision would shift a little further North in the state. However, it really does still help to satisfy some needs to go out to places like that close to home. I'd rather it be there than all the way in RI and it can still be a selling point for Greater Hartford, especially the Southeastern tip of it.

i am, personally, very excited that the casino got voted down in RI. it would have been terrible for the state, especially providence.

It does promote Urbanism indeed and we are all supporters of it. However, here in the CT Forums we have a higher percentage of people with capitalistic tendencies, from what I've read. I am one of them to an extent. We like making money in CT what can I say. However, I also think that the Casinos have boosted the region and has helped get Norwich and New London back into the consiousness of the State. Plus there's no other way we would have an MGM Grand and House of Blues coming into the state at the same time. I'm excited about those prospects, I can't even lie. I plan on having a good time down there.

norwich has been hindered by the casino if anything. i can't say much about new london as i haven't spent as much time there.
the casinos promote more monotony in what there is to do. there's going to the casino in that part of the state, unless you're in mystic, which is relatively dead outside of the summer, much like newport. the nightlife and restaurant "scene" is then limited to whatever the casinos decide to offer and you end up in this big box with no outside contact. that's one of the biggest problems with a big casino and the biggest reason they suck people in and keep them there for hours and hours... there's no view of the outside world, it's like nothing else exists but that casino and the restaurants and bars inside it.

I think we all would rather have a huge hotel and HOB's built in Hartford, but the economics just aren't there... I'm glad they are in our state rather than building in NY or elsewhere... And hey we have no problem taking Rhode Islander's money...

I don't agree about Norwich, but I don't spend time there and never had any positive perception of the city anyway. I'm sure it has potential, but again I'm not qualified to talk about it. I know that the Casinos have at least reversed the population decline that Norwich was suffering from, even though there have been growing pains, I think that's overall a positive for Norwich. The Casinos do what Casinos do and they do it pretty well in SE CT. I have no problem with them doing business and building an empire that reaches outside of the State with the HQ's right here at home. I mean, I could think of industries that I would prefer to be here, but that doesn't mean I'm going to be upset when I see a CT Business growing and thriving. The politicians in those towns and cities have strong relationships with the Mashantucketts and Mohegans and they are active partners in improving the community. They are all neighbors, we did not have like a Harrah's or some out of state corporation do this. CT Natives built those gaming empires and good for them.
