It was eclipsed by Hue during the Nguyen Dynasty as the capital of Vietnam, but served as the capital of French Indochina from 1887 to 1945.
From 1945 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam. Nowaday Hanoi has for the most part functioned as the nation's capital.
Though smaller and less modern than Ho Chi Minh City(Saigon), Hanoi bursts with a determined energy that speaks of its historical and political significance. Hanoi's population about 3,500,000. Hanoi means “city inside the Red River”, and if history is what youenjoy, this city has it in abundance! Hanoi has been a capital, a fortress and aport many times during its long history. The French influence is still evidentwith wide, tree-lined boulevards, elegant squares and weathered colonialbuildings, though glass fronted office buildings and deluxe hotels are nowtowering above the trees. Whether you fancy a wander through the narrowstreets of the old quarter, a stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake or West Lake.
